The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford | Ron Hansen
3 posts | 7 read | 2 reading | 7 to read
Ron Hansen was the first writer to approach the mythology of the West with the intent of rewriting history, to show the mixed motives and dubious intentions of heroes and outlaws alike. Drawing on contemporary records, newspapers and courtroom reports The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford creates a vivid, detailed description of the James gang and the America that created them, and builds a stunning portrait of one of the founding myths of the United States. Hansen re-creates the real West of the most famous outlaw of them all, Jesse James, and of his death at the hands of Robert Ford. Ford is drawn to Jesse, uncertain if he wants to serve or destroy him, or somehow become him. James, a charismatic, superstitious, and moody man, controls his ragged gang who fear his temper and quick shooting.

Outlaw Jesse James, son of a preacher, later a famous bank robber and murderer, was one of the most iconic figures from the era following the Civil War. He fought the law, but in this case, the law did not win because he was killed by Robert Ford, a new recruit to the gang.

There was also a 2007 film adaptation of the titled novel starring Brad Pitt as Jesse James and Casey Affleck as Robert Ford.

Today‘s Goodwill score - all for $9 total! All in great condition. Some I‘ve read (King, JSF, Bechdel), some I haven‘t. I love finding nice used books for myself and for swaps or giveaways.

Goodwill tip: Always scan the “business” and “inspirational” sections. I often find misplaced books there; sometimes great finds!

Samplergal @britt_brooke there is a thrift store in Miami that is like that for me. I could come home with twenty each time if I wanted to. It‘s close to a couple colleges, which is why. Tons of great lit and art books. ❤️. So little time. 6y
