A Killing of Innocents
A Killing of Innocents: A Novel | Deborah Crombie
7 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
New York Times bestseller Deborah Crombie returns with a new novel focusing on Scotland Yard detectives Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James as they must solve the stabbing death of a young woman before panic spreads across London. On a rainy November evening, a young woman hurries through the crowd in Londons historic Russell Square. Out of the darkness, someone jostles her, then brushes past. A moment later, she stumbles, collapsing against a tree. When a young mother finds her body and alerts the police, Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and his sergeant, Doug Cullen, are called to the scene. The victim, Sasha Johnson, is a trainee doctor at a nearby hospital, and shes been stabbed. Kincaid immediately calls his detective wife, Gemma James, who has recently been assigned to a task force on knife crime. Along with her partner, detective sergeant Melody Talbot, Gemma joins the investigation. But Sasha Johnson doesnt fit the profile of the typical knife crime victim. Single, successful, daughter of a black professional family, she has no history of abusive relationships or any connection to gangs. She had her secrets, though, and Kincaid uncovers an awkward connection to his Notting Hill friends Wesley and Betty Howard. As the detectives unravel Sashas tangled relationships, another stabbing puts London in a panic, and Kincaids team needs all their resources to find the killer stalking the dark streets of Bloomsbury.

This latest Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James novel is so, so good! I love the intermixing of their professional and private lives. All of the characters come alive and I always want more. Of course there‘s murder, but it seems to be so random with too many theories and too many suspects. When the truth is discovered, everything fits neatly together. Is there a next book? Please? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Don‘t you just love a well-written, character-driven mystery? And this one, featuring Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James, is a good one. A young doctor in training: Sarah Johnson, is murdered. As the team investigates, several other deaths occur, or are discovered. Unraveling the links between them reveals the killer, but it wasn‘t who I initially expected.

An entertaining read!

First book well begun this weekend: an ARC of A Killing of Innocents by Deborah Crombie. If you enjoy witty, intricate British mysteries, Crombie‘s Kincaid and James series is one of the best. This is her newest, which hits the shelves Feb 2023. So far it‘s pretty damn good!

PatriciaU Finished this tonight and will say it‘s one of Crombie‘s best in the series. I can usually spot the guilty one at least halfway through most mysteries but I was totally wrong on this one! It‘s a captivating continuation of the series, but if you haven‘t read the earlier ones, you can still follow the plot here. But then go read the earlier books in the series. You‘ll enjoy them! 2y
