The Boys from Biloxi
The Boys from Biloxi: A Legal Thriller | John Grisham
20 posts | 22 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
#1 New York Times bestselling author John Grisham returns to Mississippi in his most gripping legal thriller yet, the riveting story of two sons of immigrant families who grow up as friends, but ultimately find themselves on opposite sides of the law. Grisham's trademark twists and turns will keep you tearing through the pages until the stunning conclusion. For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia. Keith Rudy and Hugh Malco grew up in Biloxi in the sixties and were childhood friends, as well as Little League all-stars. But as teenagers, their lives took them in different directions. Keith's father became a legendary prosecutor, determined to "clean up the Coast." Hugh's father became the "Boss" of Biloxi's criminal underground. Keith went to law school and followed in his father's footsteps. Hugh preferred the nightlife and worked in his father's clubs. The two families were headed for a showdown, one that would happen in a courtroom. Life itself hangs in the balance in The Boys from Biloxi, a sweeping saga rich with history and with a large cast of unforgettable characters.

4 ⭐. I felt like reading something with southern charm and atmosphere....even though it was full of crime.

Finished my first John Grisham book last night! Gifted to me by my middle child ( It was very good .. childhood buddies .. good vs evil! Totally recommend!

marleed I‘m working my way through the entire JG Grisham canon. I could have come close to finishing had I read book a month in 2023, but I already blew that goal so maybe by the end of 2024! Oh and all but one gifted JG are thrifted - I have all but this one. Although I read a library copy I have to wait for my own thrifted copy because this is how I entertain myself! 2y

I was honestly disappointed with this novel. It is such a slow build to the climax of the narrative, which was a bit of a dud. Its such a long novel that covers so much time, but to me a lot of the background was either unnecessary or overly detailed. There also seemed to be so many tangent storylines that, to be, did not seem necessary. I did like the determination and drive of many of the characters.

marleed Yeah, I‘m typically a pick on JG books but gave this one a so-so. 2y

I usually fly through a John Grisham book, but I found this one to be slow. It did pick up about 65% done. I don't think it was one of Graham's better novels, but that's just my opinion.

❤️Yes I do. I usually set it for 5 more than I read the year before.

💜I have meet it, actually over. 92/85 so far. I may get a couple more read before the new year.

💙 It's going to be cold 🥶 here in Arkansas, so probably stay around the house for Christmas, except for going down the road to in-laws for Christmas.

@Eggs Thanks for the tag

This story of childhood friends, two boys from Biloxi, who choose very different career paths was both compelling & engaging. Grisham really knows how to spin a yarn and this one was quite a showpiece. It‘s a slow burn but the final confrontation is an epic showdown!! I do think 50- 100 pages could have been whittled down but narration by Michael Beck is so outstanding that I didn‘t mind those extra hours listening to him.

Cinfhen Thanks for putting this on my #ReadersRadar @robinb any chance you‘re gonna pick this up soon @JoyBlue ?!? 😁 2y
JoyBlue @Cinfhen LOL! Pick it up? Probably. Soon? Not bloody likely—the holds list is months-long. Thanks for putting it on my #ReadersRadar . . . I added it to my wish list. 😍 2y

Morning smoothie with a heaping side of Grisham 😊I appreciate the amount of time Grisham spends fleshing out his character‘s origin stories ♥️

Megabooks I remember my mom had some opinions about this but I can‘t remember what they were. 🤔 2y
Cinfhen Ohhh, I‘m almost finished- ask your mom to share her opinions. I liked this one but it felt VERY VERY long!!!! Too long, however Michael Beck is an outstanding reader!! I love his southern accent- it‘s perfection 🙌🏻 @Megabooks 2y

Hmmm, I glad I have a few days before assigning my stars to this one. I‘m still deciding between a so-so or a pick. The story of Keith vs Hugh was good. I liked their origin stories and how they got from their grandfathers to their fathers to where Keith and Hugh stood on the final page. But I had little interest in the supporting characters used to build the story.

John Grisham is always an easy read. Two childhood friends go separate ways on either side of the law. I didn‘t feel that the characters were fleshed out and thing seemed to fall into place too easily for the good guys. 🫤

I was an avid Grisham reader when he first burst on the scene, and I‘ll admit part of that was probably because he had a home in Oxford (20 minutes from my childhood home). I loved his early writing, but somehow fell behind after The Runaway Jury. So I was happy to have the chance to read this arc for his latest coming in Oct. It centers around two very different families living along the MS Coast (1960s-1980s), the Rudys and the Malcos. 🔻

robinb The patriarchs, Jesse and Lance, go in very different directions in life. Jesse works hard, gets a law degree and enters politics to make a difference. Lance turns to vice and becomes a wealthy mob boss. A battle of good vs. evil ensues. Their sons, Keith and Hugh, who were star baseball players growing up and good friends, follow in their fathers‘ footsteps. This one has some triumphs and tears, some vengeance and greed, 🔻 2y
robinb some covert maneuvers and some bittersweet moments. I did enjoy this book. It had a slow start for me, but I became more entrenched once I got past the backstories. There were some questionable legal moves (for me, but then again, I‘m no lawyer), and I found the ending a bit anticlimactic. But overall, I found myself happy to be back in Grisham‘s world. 4.5/5⭐️ (edited) 2y
marleed I‘m 4 yrs into working my way through his entire collection. It‘s been fun and I deliberately did not read them in publishing order. I‘m missing a physical copy of his last book -sparring partners and I own his first book in paperback, but otherwise my entire collection has been thrifted one book and 2 bucks at a time! 2y

robinb @marleed That‘s great! To be honest, I do have a few that I‘ve bought but haven‘t read yet, but I don‘t own all of his. I am working my way to owning a physical copy of them all. My big regret? Not getting some of the earlier ones signed since he lived so close by. 🙄🤣 (edited) 2y
marleed @robinb oh dang - signed early first prints would be cool! 2y
Cinfhen I just rediscovered how much I love Grisham!! I too stopped reading his books at some point but now I‘m happily back in his orbit @robinb @marleed I still need to read Sparing Partners and I‘ll be looking for this one in October 2y
robinb @Cinfhen I‘m glad to get back to him too. I remember devouring his early ones, but I guess the rest of my TBR got in the way? Not sure why I went on an hiatus from him. But it feels like returning to an old friend. 😊 2y
robinb @marleed I know, right?! I‘m kicking myself…😩 2y
