Love Sick | Cory Martin
9 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
At 28, Cory Martin thought she had it all, a budding career as a writer in Hollywood, an apartment of her own, and a healthy obsession with yoga. But when she found herself on the floor of her apartment wailing into the phone, 'but I don't want to be sick, ' her entire world came crashing down. A doctor had just revealed that she had Multiple Sclerosis, a potentially debilitating disease, her good friend was getting married that weekend and the only people she wanted to call were her parents. In a time when she was supposed to be coming into her own as an adult, all she could think was who's going to want to marry me now? As she embarked on a medical quest, subjecting herself to countless MRIs and a painful spinal tap that landed her in the ER, Cory simultaneously threw herself head first into dating. But no matter how many doctors she saw or men she met there would never be a cure for MS. And if you think it's hard to get the guy you're dating to give you a ride to the airport, try getting him to drive you to the hospital. Add to that an unfortunate incident with a blue thong and a cute young doctor, and Cory quickly realized that just as there was no concrete method to diagnose and treat the disease, there was no surefire way to find "the one." Love Sick is a smart and witty account of dating while navigating a life of uncertain health. Writing from a place of strength and vulnerability, Cory Martin faces her fears head on with humor and grace. Her tales are true to life and relatable. There is no magical ending and no grand epiphany. Instead it is her desire to be loved and feel normal that makes her journey so poignant.

This woman can write! She tells her story of dating and life after and before she was diagnosed with MS in her twenties. I laughed and I cried. This isn‘t a dark read, but some of the stories of others she writes is so beautifully written and told I teared! I also laughed! You feel as though you‘re going on this journey with her as a BFF sitting right there. 10% of the proceeds from the book goes to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.5/5

I‘m Margaux. I‘ve love to read and have recently started Book Art Bookmarks. I sort of stumbled upon making them through trial and error and loved doing so. I currently have an Etsy shop where I sell them. I have two boys with my husband and live in Wisconsin.I love to read pretty much any genre. Favorite authors include Sarah J Maas, Jeannette Walls, and Ami McKay.

corycatelyn I love your bookmarks 🤗 (in case you couldn't tell 😂) 6y

#2017Book124
I planned to read the first few chapters of this memoir before bed, but ended up staying up late to read the entire thing. Cory Martin's story of learning to live with MS and carrying on as though she's fine is inspiring. She approaches the subject with honesty and humor, never shying away from the more embarrassing aspects of the disease. If you know anyone who is living with MS, I highly recommend checking out this memoir.

Bailedbailed

This is most likely an important book for young people diagnosed with chronic illness. I wasn't give my first diagnosis until my happily-married late thirties, so it was hard to relate to Cory's experience. But the writing is snappy and fun, so if it's your jam to read about 20-something love go for it. I chose to bail because life's too short for books you don't connect with.

Cinfhen Sorry you bailed but I agree, life is too short to waste on a book that isn't working for you! Im sure it will still speak to others. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Thanks @Cinfhen - I don't feel bad about bailing on this. I have my #cupidgoespostal gifts and some new book purchases here on vacation. Plenty of better choices! Cont wait until tomorrow so I can open my goodies. 💓 8y

I'm not sure this book is my jam. I'm reading it from NetGalley, in anticipation of the paperback release. It makes me feel about a hundred (I'm only halfway there)! I've got chronic illnesses, but had a wildly different experience than the author.

I'll give it a bit longer before I bail, but at 36% it may happen soon. Based on the review from @readinginthedark I might just skip to the last chapter!

readinginthedark It made me feel old, too, and she wasn't that much younger than me when diagnosed! Different temperaments, I guess. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @readinginthedark Oh I feel better then! I think you hit the nail on the head - it's temperaments! 8y

Mehso-so

Cory Martin's writing style was very natural. It felt like she was just having a conversation with me while I read, which I really liked. Her dating shenanigans were pretty funny. But I liked the last chapter the most, where she took me through this moment and the conclusions she had drawn about her illness and life. Not what I expected--I would recommend this as a bit of a beach read/Sex in the City/health crisis memoir, if that makes any sense.

This girl! I have never felt that was my purpose. Wow.

Thinking you relate to a character/narrator, and then they drop a crazy bomb on you--more #booknerdproblems #photoadaynov16

PlannerGirlBookClub I feel like this has to be written tongue in cheek.. like the author slipping some satire into their romance novel. Very meta 😏 8y
readinginthedark @PlannerGirlBookClub That's what I assumed at first, but the rest of the page is about how she's contemplating sleeping with some guy before the third date so he doesn't run off. 😕 8y
Kimzey Hmmmmm. Written by a man, I assume? 8y

readinginthedark @Kimzey Nope, girl. And it's a memoir! She was diagnosed with MS and is contemplating her likelihood of finding love now...I'm finding her logic on love to be really lacking! Hopefully this is all about how she learns from her experiences? I would probably bail, but it's an easy read and a galley. 8y
Kimzey Wow! Keep us posted on her personal growth! 🤔 8y
Texreader Yikes!!! 8y
kricheal Well that's just sad 8y
heatherspoetlife I never felt like it was my purpose, but definitely that it was something guys expected, after some convincing because you're a good girl, but I rarely did anyway. But some definitely treated me that way. 8y
Krisjericho Yikes 8y
readinginthedark @StoredFeminism I'm so sorry people treated you that way. My mom's first marriage was an abusive one, and I vowed after first hearing her story that I would never let a guy take advantage of me or act like he was better than me. If someone even talked to me wrong I didn't give them the time of day. Glad you didn't let them get you down! 8y
heatherspoetlife Thanks! It was usually my first clue to get away from that guy but I try to give people three strikes. The guys knew I wouldn't tolerate disrespect in public but they somehow thought I was putting on a showSorry to hear about your mother but it sounds like she got away eventually. 8y

Just got this from #netgalley and I'm excited! I don't usually get approved for books I'm really wanting to read. Good so far!
