2023: World War III | Carl Berryman
15 posts
In 2023: World War III, the Peoples Republic of China explodes out of its borders. This book presents China's political, social and economic rationale, military preparations and grand strategy for such a disaster. It discusses the lack of political and military preparations by the West, the consequences for China's neighbors, and how the world in general and the United States in particular will respond. Events in today's world makes it all possible. The only way to prevent World War III is to plan for it now.

For interested parties: a roundup of my 2023 reading year (the annual post for which I resurrect my neglected blog): https://commonplacehope.wordpress.com/2024/01/13/the-massive-reading-review-of-2...

“2023 was a year for both classics and chunksters: from the Little House books to The Count of Monte Cristo and Clarissa, I read lots of old books, lots of long books, and lots of long old books. And I read plenty of other stuff as well!”

Over all, I read 61 books for the year (not great, but not terrible). Here‘s to more great reads in 2024!

I‘m a bit late to the party on this. I spent the entire weekend fighting the flu. I finished 52 books in Apple Books last year. #2023 #endofyear #applebooks #ebooks #audiobooks #abookaweek

kspenmoll I hope you are feeling better now! 12mo
GingerAntics @kspenmoll Monday will be my first day back at work. I finally went to the walk in clinic on Friday and they put me on basically a Z pack. It‘s just going to be working on increasing my stamina again. I still can‘t stand up for more than a few minutes without sitting down. Officially not COVID or the flu, but whatever it is has really knocked me on my butt. 11mo

I thought this was a surprising stat from my StoryGraph wrap-up. I know I read more light books at the very end of the year, but I read both light and dark year-round, and especially like dark stuff in October—I‘m surprised to see the line move so strongly upward! Its highest point is September and that was my month with the lowest ratings. 🤔

It says I only read 5 books from my own shelves but I think I‘m just bad at marking things as owned 😅

Kristin_Reads I love the StoryGraph stats and graphs! 12mo

#goodreads

(I don't think the number of pages read is accurate.. gr doesn't differentiate pages read from minutes listened)

The number of books I read per year has gone down significantly recently, but I did achieve a goal in 2023: more than 50% were new-to-me titles. As a BIG re-reader, I'm going to count it as a win- and still celebrate that I exceeded 100 books this year. My 4 faves of '23 are pictured here; predictably, two YAs topped the list, but I'm very surprised that the other two took war as a central theme. Here's to all the titles ahead in '24!

LeahBergen I loved Operation Heartbreak! 12mo
Andrea313 @LeahBergen Yes! One of my first reads of the year, and got things off to a great start. For those who care about such things, it was also turned into a musical a few years ago, which had its West End debut this year. Fingers crossed for a Broadway transfer! 🤞 12mo

Daisey The Godfather will make my list for this year as well! 12mo
GinaKButler @Daisey I was just telling my teenagers that most great movies came from great books. I also read Jurassic Park this year. Hoping to read Jaws and The Beach in 2024! 12mo

well, it is what it is. some goals can't be achieved last year, but that's okay.

let's set a new goal for 365 new days ahead and try harder to make it complete this time. i love the shade of this year's banner, so i have a good feeling we're off to a great start. keep calm and read books~ 😉✌
