A Witch's Guide to Fake-Dating a Demon
A Witch's Guide to Fake-Dating a Demon | Sarah Hawley
13 posts | 10 read | 6 to read
Muriel Spark is prophesied to be the most powerful witch seen in centuries of the famed Spark family. While she excels at nature magic, she sucks at the flashy skills her controlling mother Diantha values, like summoning and transmogrification. If she can't improve in those areas, Diantha won't pay for Muriel's graduate degree in herbology. Muriel prefers baking to brewing potions and gardening to casting hexes, but for the sake of her degree, she agrees to practice. When a spell to summon flour goes very wrong, though, Muriel finds herself staring down a demon--one she inadvertently summoned for a soul bargain. Ozroth the Ruthless is a legend among demons. Cold, powerful, and merciless, he drives hard bargains to collect the emotion- and magic-filled mortal souls that power the demon plane. But his reputation has suffered ever since a bargain gone awry left Ozroth with a human soul planted in his chest--a soul that makes him emotionally unstable and no longer quite so ruthless. If he can strike a bargain with Muriel, Ozroth will earn back his deadly reputation. But the witch is funny. And curvy. And disgustingly--endearingly--cheerful. Ozroth can't leave Muriel's side until they complete a bargain, which she refuses to do (turns out some humans are attached to their souls). Becoming awkward roommates quickly escalates when Diantha stops by and Muriel, terrified to confess to the inadvertent summoning, blurts out that she's dating the demon. As Ozroth and Muriel struggle with their opposing goals and maintaining the appearance of a fake relationship, real attraction blooms between them. But Ozroth has a limited amount of time to strike the deal, and if Muriel gives up her soul, she'll lose all her emotions--including love.

This was a very cute, steamy paranormal rom-com about a witch who accidentally summons a demon. There were some very cute scenes, and I liked her friend crew (I‘m guessing they get their own books?). I didn‘t love the moms who were very cringy and over the top mean to the point of caricatures. Still a fun read. 4⭐️

This was just FUN — clever and funny writing, with real characters and a uniquely tricky situation. I appreciated the way the real world was neatly redrawn to include magic and magic users, and Mariel‘s struggles with her magic and her abusive family were very realistic. I guessed what was happening pretty early into the story, but predictability didn‘t really ruin the story for me — it was enjoyable to take the journey with the characters.

“Oh, no.” Mariel Spark stared at the startled chicken that had materialized on her kitchen counter. “That wasn‘t what I meant to do.” #FirstLineFridays @ShyBookOwl

ShyBookOwl Well, this sounds very fun. Enjoy! 1y

#LMPBC Round 17 - Group W (W is for Witches)

This was a sometimes fun/sometimes cheesy paranormal romance that follows Mariel Spark, who was prophesied to be the most powerful witch in centuries but hasn‘t lived up to that potential. She prefers baking and gardening, but her mother constantly berates her. Mariel pretends to date a demon named Ozroth to make her mother happy and how their fake relationship turns into something real.

I just read this interview where the author talked about why she wrote this book. I thought it was interesting. I also preordered the audiobook for this book.
