Mad Honey
Mad Honey | Katie Welch
10 posts | 11 read | 8 to read
When Beck Wise vanished his girlfriend Melissa Makepeace poured herself into caring for the family farm in Kamloops, silently absorbing yet another man disappearing from her life. But when Beck reappears three months later, thin, pale, with no idea what day it is and filled with memories of being part of a bee colony, a series of layered mysteries begin to unravel. What had happened to Beck? Where did her father go? How can she keep the farm together? With gorgeous descriptions, deft characterizations and a page-turning plot, Mad Honey immerses the reader in a search for truth bounded by the everyday magic of beekeeping, of family and of finding peace, all while asking how much we really understand the natural world.

A beautiful mysterious read. I was ready to believe in magical transformations to explain a disappearance 3/4s of the way into this story of bees, love, commitment and compassion. 🇨🇦 lit has a new voice

I just finished Jodi Picoult‘s Mad Honey so I figured I‘d chase it with Katie Welch‘s.

Part mystery, part something else all together! Just because we ignore something, don‘t understand it or can‘t relate to it doesn‘t mean it isn‘t real! I‘m a better person having read this book! 🙋‍♀️🐝 Follow The Little Free Library on Tower Drive on Insta and FB!

There is so much to unpack with this one. Secrecy vs privacy. What do you owe someone you love? As the mom of a trans kid, and as woman, this had all the feels for me. But it was really well done. I was worried, but I loved it.

Book 31📚 5⭐️

I believe everyone should read this book. It can really open your eyes to some serious topics. Trans abuse and relationship abuse are the core issues discussed. It is a beautiful and heartbreaking story.🏳️‍⚧️💕

This is my first by this author. Great character development. I‘m sitting at the edge of my seat to hear the rest.

I downloaded this thinking it was the new Jodi Picoult, but instead found a wonderful new author. I loved the two mysteries that were part of the story, the rural setting and the the characters. Melissa's heartbreak and longing for a happy ending in the disappearance of her father was particularly well done. The story is also a tribute to bees and the need to protect them for our survival. I will look for more from this author. 4/5 stars.

A young man disappears from his southern Ontario farm job (on his girlfriend‘s farm) for a few months & then shows up with the strangest excuse: he had turned into a hive of bees. The premise hooked me and the execution kept me turning the pages. This is one wild ride! #ShadowGiller2022 #CanLit

Lindy @batsy Yep! I‘m going to seek out author interviews to find out how Katie Welch came up with this idea in the first place. 2y

Lindy @TrishB it‘s different! And all the farm stuff rings true to me, having grown up on one. 2y
TrishB I‘m very scared of bees so I‘m not sure I can read a book about being one! 2y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders There are WAY too many books to choose from!! Who the heck knows what‘s going to be on this list on Tuesday!! 2y
Lindy @TrishB better stay away from this one in that case 😉 2y
Lindy @Penny_LiteraryHoarders Do you happen to know at what time the longlist will be announced on Tuesday? 2y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @Lindy 🤔 hmmm I don‘t actually know?? I had in my head 11 am but I don‘t know if that‘s even the right time? 2y
Lindy @Penny_LiteraryHoarders they‘ve put an announcement on their website: 9:30 am ET (edited) 2y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @Lindy early to rise for you!! 2y
Lindy @Penny_LiteraryHoarders Ha! I get up at 5 most mornings. The tricky thing is that I‘m travelling to Saskatchewan that day, but fortunately I will be home until 8:30 am. [rubbing hands together in anticipation of the longlist] 2y

“I missed the stars, when I was bees,” he whispered.

Centique Beautiful quote and this image is sublime. 2y
Lindy @Centique Thanks Paula. The bees just love the globe thistle in my garden. 2y
