The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks
The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks | Shauna Robinson
From acclaimed author Shauna Robinson comes a bookish, millennial story about a young woman looking to start a new chapter in her life, and in doing so finds a community built around the books we love and the stories we can't forget. Who decides which stories are worth telling? Maggie Banks's life is a bit of a mess. After losing a job and moving back home with her parents, she's desperate for a new Life Plan. So when her best friend asks for help running her struggling bookstore in the quaint town of Bells River, Maggie jumps on the opportunity. She doesn't even like books, per se, but anything's better than obsessively checking job boards from her childhood bedroom. It turns out Maggie's not prepared for small-town life. More specifically, the strict rules enforced by the local historical society: the bookstore is only allowed to sell "classics". But with a town full of people looking for fresh stories, Maggie knows she'll have to get creative to keep the store afloat. And so begins Maggie's underground book club: fun, goofy, and totally against the rules. Catering to the stories folks actually want to read and making fun of the stuffy "classics", Maggie falls in love with books and realizes the power stories have to build community. But with a historical society itching to catch her and shut her down for good, and a budding relationship with an adorably strait-laced inspector weighing on her conscience, everything starts to fall apart. And just as Maggie feels herself becoming a part of the community, she unearths a town secret that could ruin everything. She'll have to figure out what's more important: the books that formed a small town's history, or the stories poised to change it all. A warm, funny book club read about community, finding yourself, and the transformative power of stories, The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks is a much-needed novel perfect for readers of The Storied Life of AJ Fikry and The Bookish Life of Nina Hill. Praise for Must Love Books "A heartfelt and exciting debut...a wise and honest story of how it feels to be a young woman in search of yourself."Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times bestselling author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Malibu Rising "A tender reflection on finding your person while you're still desperately searching for yourself."KJ Dell'Antonia, New York Times bestselling author of The Chicken Sisters "A book for book lovers... This book feels like a love letter to book people wrapped up in a story about a woman finding her path in life while helping at her friend‘s bookstore.
Maggie is jobless and agrees to cover her friend‘s bookshop when she goes on maternity leave, but Maggie isn‘t a book person. When one mistake lands the shop in trouble, Maggie breaks all the rules to help it survive and accidentally builds a community.

Still in my fluffy bookish book bubble. But I think I am ready to step out of it now. This one was nice, kept me engaged. I liked the characters and the love for books.

A small town story about a reluctant reader discovering a world of books :) It wasn't amazing, but the book was light-hearted and easy read :)

This is sort of a rom com, but the romance is not center stage.

Maggie is running her friend's bookstore while the friend is on maternity leave. She has good intentions of trying to be helpful by implementing new ideas that are against the co-owner's rules, but she ends up creating a fiasco.

Aims42 I appreciated that romance wasn‘t the main storyline in this book 😊 11mo
Amie @Aims42 I agree! It was just the right amount for me and it felt realistic. 11mo
Aims42 @Amie Yes, just the right amount to be believable without being “tooooo much” 😄 11mo

I finally played around with the #storygraph 2023 wrap-up, and I'm really digging the summary infographic. Also all the stats!

A light read about a young woman finding her way in life. Nothing deep, just a fun little romp that includes a secret bookstore, a tiny bit of romance, and a bit of a feminist twist. Fun summer read.

I‘ve been listening to this off and on for awhile now. Since I needed to pick a new walking book, I started it up again. I‘ve only got a couple of hours left. After so many warm days, it was surprising when it was actually relatively cold today. #audiowalk

Literally loved everything about this book. The characters are perfect in their imperfections, the plot evenly paced and kept me engaged. Thrilled to share my name with a creative, bookish soul in the main characters as she carves out a place in the world for herself instead of conforming in societal expectations.

Not a lover of romcoms but a sucker for a bookstore setting, I was pleasantly surprised this was so much more than expected. Will definitely be following up with her next novel, Must Love Books.

Last book purchase of 2022 At B&N after seeing Puss in Boots (I‘m just a giant child). 🍿📖

jeannasser Looks interesting 🤔 how was puss in boots? 😁 2y
MaleficentBookDragon @jeannasser so cute and much funnier than expected. Personally, I thought it was a little dark for young kids, but it might just go over their heads. 2y
Scochrane26 I want to see Puss in Boots, too 2y

I loved the concept behind the underground book club. I would totally attend events like that. 😂

Not over the top, but a humor read for sure.

This was such a fun read! I started it in hopes it would get me through Thanksgiving day at my in-laws, but I couldn‘t put it down and I finished it today 😅 I‘ll be starting another book I guess 😆 It kept my interest and usually I‘m not a fan of rom-com type books but this was very well done! I didn‘t roll my eyes or groan at something cheesy being said, so an A+ pick!

If there‘s a better way to de-stress on a Sunday than with a cozy blanket and a fun new read, I don‘t want to hear it. This is the only way I want to de-stress on a Sunday 🤪🤓😌 I‘m 50 pages into “The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks” by Shauna Robinson and it‘s a perfect palate cleanser from all the murder mysteries I‘ve been reading 🥰

. Firstly I admit I am always drawn to books about bookstores, readers, book clubs etc and the title of this book alone drew me in. But a title alone cannot hold you snuggled up reading with a smile on your face for 2 entire afternoons...only a well written book with likeable characters, believable plot lines, humour, friendships and some romance can do that and this book has it all.

The tagged book is really good - a town built on one author, working in a bookstore, a wonderful cast of characters.
The description of apple cheddar scones made my mouth water so I just had to make some for myself.
The recipe I used is from Smitten Kitchen and it lives up to its literary inspiration ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
