Gleanings: Stories from the Arc of a Scythe
Gleanings: Stories from the Arc of a Scythe | Neal Shusterman
21 posts | 18 read | 8 to read
The New York Times bestselling Arc of the Scythe series continues with thrilling stories that span the timeline. Storylines continue. Origin stories are revealed. And new Scythes emerge! There are still countless tales of the Scythedom to tell. Centuries passed between the Thunderhead cradling humanity and Scythe Goddard trying to turn it upside down. For years humans lived in a world without hunger, disease, or death with Scythes as the living instruments of population control. Neal Shusterman--along with collaborators David Yoon, Jarrod Shusterman, Sofa Lapuente, Michael H. Payne, Michelle Knowlden, and Joelle Shusterman--returns to the world throughout the timeline of the Arc of a Scythe series. Discover secrets and histories of characters you've followed for three volumes and meet new heroes, new foes, and some figures in between. Gleanings shows just how expansive, terrifying, and thrilling the world that began with the Printz Honor-winning Scythe truly is.

I‘ve finished the reading year with this, only because I promised my 16-year old I‘d read it before the end of the year and he wouldn‘t let it go. Just made it! This is his favourite book series of all time, and it is really very good. Recommend if you enjoy dystopian fiction/fantasy/sci-fi, this book is a spin-off of the trilogy itself in which other authors give their take on the backstories of various scythes. Interestingly well done.

Avanders I‘ve only read the first so far, and I know some people didn‘t love the love story in the first (I have no idea what happens with it as the series progresses), but it was one of my favorites at the time time - I loved the slow burn ☺️ 10mo
JillR @avanders I really loved the trilogy, thought it was really well done. Gleanings didn‘t work quite so well for me but only because it‘s short story format which is never my favourite, and it‘s been quite a while since I read the trilogy so some details were lost on me due to my dreadful memory! 10mo
Avanders @JillR ah, good to know! If/when I get to that point, it will help to manage expectations. 😁 10mo

I enjoy when an author plays within the fictional world they created, especially when they invite others in to do so to - it's like reading fanfiction, only I don't have to worry about screening for the good stories! Some of these stories fill in the history of the world, such as how Scythe Curie got her reputation or what Scythe Goddard did before he was a scythe. Others are character studies - I appreciated the one narrated by the Thunderhead.

SaunteringVaguelyDownwards You will need to have read the full series to enjoy this book, though, as there are spoilers for plot points in the last novel. 11mo

If you have read the Scythe Trilogy you need to read these stories of other scythes. So good. Loved the Dali and Gaudi one the best but don‘t tell the scythes that!🤐🤫

Currently reading Gleanings a collection of short stories. I love the Arc of a Scythe trilogy and so far I am enjoying seeing stories of other scythes and how they go about doing their job.

I love this universe sm. I didn‘t expect to love this collection (I think I‘m a little prejudiced against short stories), and maybe one or two were just ok, but overall, I devoured this. So fun and nostalgic- even tho I re-read the Scythe trilogy recently!

Overall I liked this as a continuation of the arc of the scythe series. Some of the story‘s where better then others. Even if I didn‘t like all of them it was still good to go back to the world

I don't really care about the Superbowl but I almost always watch the halftime show. This means I have the tv muted in the background & read my book while I wait 😜😬🤷‍♀️

This book was everything I was expecting, and better than I had hoped. I want more. I like the concept that the boogie man is real, and easily identifiable. I like the idea that death is possible, but only in the right hands. I like that society has shifted, that the world looks at death differently. I like the idea that society not longer can connect with “mortals“. That our problems were dumb, and easily corrected.

Fields suspected that was part of the reason for the test: to emotionally distance young scythes from their families. Although for Fields that emotional distance seemed to extend to most other human beings as well. But pets were different. Their love was unconditional—and he was certain that Trixie could be conditioned to love him.

DogMomIrene 😂😂😂 Just you wait Henry Higgins! I freaking loved Trixie! 2y

Pretty good short stories. Gives you more background and world building. Should finish the series before reading this as some plot elements are continued.

Hey Scythe fans! I just read this one and it‘s great! And it just popped up on B&N‘s half price online hardbacks! I think they‘re having this sale through the end of the year, but I‘m not positive.

@Soubhiville in case you‘re interested in picking it up!

Soubhiville Haha, I picked it up yesterday 😁. I‘m not positive, but I think the sale was just the 26th and 27th. 2y
Soubhiville Oh, maybe just the in store sale was those 2 days. 🤷‍♀️ 2y
Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville Oh that‘s excellent—I‘m glad you got a copy! 2y

I just loved the Scythe books, so I was thrilled to discover this story collection. It was such much fun to be back in that world. Here we encounter new faces and known characters with humor and darkness scattered throughout. I must read for anyone who enjoyed the novels.

Soubhiville Yay! I‘m excited to read this (eventually 🙂📚) 2y

Didn‘t like 1 story. That‘s pretty impressive in my book. To not like just 1 story in an entire anthology. Not sure which story I liked best though. I liked reading some tidbits about Scythes we met in the trilogy, and I liked reading about the exploits of other Scythes who existed in the universe of the trilogy without being mentioned. There was 1 story with a dog. A smart dog. A dog smarter than a Scythe. Maybe that one could be my favorite.

Hooked_on_books I‘m reading this now. I loved the dog story! 2y
DogMomIrene @Hooked_on_books Trixie was a clever girl! This anthology was so good. I‘m hoping he does another. 2y
Hooked_on_books @DogMomIrene That would be amazing! I just loved the world he created in Scythe and am really enjoying being back in it with the stories. 2y
DogMomIrene @Hooked_on_books definitely! I took my time reading these to savor every little detail❤️📚 2y

Loved this compilation of short stories taking place in the world of the Toll! I enjoyed gaining new perspectives on these characters. Some of the stories were super unexpected and gave more background into the Scythes we thought we knew. It was great being brought back into that world.

booklover3258 I'm so excited to read this one! Waiting for it to come to our library. 2y

This is a set of short stories from the world of the Scythedom. Some before the series, some during, some afterwards. Good completion of many stories. Something of note is that each story is co-authored. I enjoyed all of the stories from the dog to Cirrus contemplating life after. They were so different, yet still fit within same type of writing I fell in love with in the first book. Great continuation of going deeper without feeling forced.
