The Enigma of Room 622
The Enigma of Room 622: A Novel | Joël Dicker
7 posts | 8 read | 11 to read
A burnt-out thriller writer desperate to regain his creative spark becomes intrigued by a decade-old unsolved murder at a glamorous Alpine hotel in this meticulously crafted novel—a matryoshka doll of a mystery built with the precision of a Swiss watch—from the internationally bestselling author of The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair. One December night, a corpse is found in Room 622 of the Hotel Verbier, a luxury resort in the Swiss Alps. An intense police investigation begins, yet few leads are found. Time passes, and without any breaks in the case, public interest wanes. Years later, Joël Dicker, Switzerland’s novelist extraordinaire, arrives at the Verbier to recover from a bad breakup, mourn the death of his longtime publisher, and hopefully begin a new novel. While trying to solve the puzzle of his next book, Joël’s expertise in the art of the thriller put to the test when he decides to play Sherlock Holmes and look into the hotel’s long-unsolved murder case. He finds his Watson in Scarlett, a beautiful aspiring novelist staying in the next room, who joins Dicker in the investigation. Meanwhile, in the wake of his father's passing, Macaire Ebezner is poised to take over as president of the largest private bank in Switzerland. The succession captivates the news media, and the future looks bright—until it doesn't. The bank’s board, including Lev Levovitch—Geneva’s very own Jay Gatsby—has other plans, and Macaire’s triumphant rise to the top soon becomes a race against time. The Enigma of Room 622 is a diabolically addictive thriller in which a love triangle, a power struggle, shocking betrayals, and deadly envy play out against the backdrop of a not so placid Switzerland, as the truth twists and turns into something most . . . unexpected. Welp. We did it. Moved, severely downsized. These, folks, are the *only* books I can fit in the new place (not counting 1 shelf of his, and 1 bookshelf in bugga‘s closet with all of his, of course ;)). Now I just need to rearrange and make decisions about which ones go in front since I clearly overestimated the space 😯

Nonetheless… still acquiring more? 🫣🫣 Anyone read this one?

Also, sooo happy fall is here ðŸ‚ðŸðŸ§¡â™¥ï¸ðŸ’›ðŸðŸ‚

BethM Girl when we moved I went from 5 bookcases to two. I have books in closets and clothing trunks lol. Despite that two years later there are again more books in the house 😂 1y
JamieArc I haven‘t read the Dicker book but it‘s sitting on my shelf waiting for me to. Good luck on finding space for new books ðŸ˜ðŸ˜‚ 1y
Avanders @BethM oh man, it is so hard downsizing books!! The only real struggle I have 😜 Lol hey, that‘s the only way to live, right?! 1y

Currently reading. Good puzzle, but I swear on all that is holy, if I see "Fifteen years earlier..." one more time, imma just Google the synopsis and have done with it. Could be at least 100 pages shorter.

This was a lot longer than it needed to be, and the framing story, where the author tells us about writing the book and waxes eloquent about his late publisher, felt unnecessary and even jarring. The "main" story- about who was killed in room 622 and why- was interesting but too involved. I was half entertained and half bored. The last third was quite interesting as we finally started getting answers but it took too long to get there.

This is a complex, layered mystery built upon a mysterious murder in the exclusive Hotel Verbier. A mystery with many suspects that remains unsolved for years….till a well in known mystery writer and an inquisitive woman named Scarlette end up in the same hotel on the same weekend. Together they solve the mystery. Only critique is the length of the story and jumping around to numerous times in the storyline, which can create some confusion.

At first this book didn't seem to be my type, but along the way I didn't even realize when I was so caught up in the story. I intensely lived the mystery of room 622 until the end, which, for me, was somehow predictable, but it didn't bother me. I experienced the joy with the characters at the end of this book and, honestly, it was a very pleasant surprise for me :)

Enjoying the puzzle a couple of chapters in, although the writing itself is nothing special. That could be because it's a translation though, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. It's been billed as a book "for Horowitz fans" so probably more about the puzzle than the writing I suppose.
Also: there's a lot of smoking in this book, surprisingly. Can't remember a recent release in the past few years that mentioned a character smoking. Huh.

Interesting premise, acceptable follow through. This was twist on a whodunit with a mystery within the mystery. The pace was slow and it was a bit wordier than it really needed to be. Maybe something was lost in translation? I think it had the potential to be a fun and engaging book, if only it wasn't so long and verbose. Cut this down and I would have enjoyed this much more.
