Flipped
Flipped | Wendelin Van Draanen
The first time she saw him, she flipped. The first time he saw her, he ran. That was the second grade, but not much has changed by the seventh. She says: My Bryce. Still walking around with my first kiss. He says: Its been six years of strategic avoidance and social discomfort. But in the eighth grade everything gets turned upside down. And just as hes thinking theres more to her than meets the eye, she s thinking that hes not quite all he seemed. This is a classic romantic comedy of errors told in alternating chapters by two fresh, funny voices. Wendelin Van Draanen is at her best here with a knockout cast of quirky characters and a hilarious series of misunderstandings and missed opportunities. But underlying the humor are two teens in transition. They are each learning to look beyond the surface of people, both figuring out who they are, who they want to be, and who they want to be with. From the Hardcover edition.

★★★★½

“‘Some of us get dipped in flat, some in satin, some in gloss....‘ He turned to me. ‘But every once in a while, you find someone who's iridescent, and when you do, nothing will ever compare.‘”

In this book, the author managed to engage and charm me with their whimsical setting work and wit and I even found myself empathizing with their characters. This novel is most definitely a great deal larger than the sum of its parts.

mandarchy I loved this book. It's the closest to romance any middle grade book seems to get. 3y

A worthy lesson: Flipped illustrates why looking beneath the surface of others is and always will be important 🤗

So relieved we will have at least one sane house in Congress, and hope to see some oversight. So disappointed that the wave didn't carry over to the senate, and too many states elected Repub governors. Don't understand why people keep voting agaimst their own best interests, and how so many support an evil, corrupt, racist, criminal liar. Sorry to be so emotional. Will try to (mostly) avoid politics here from now on.

merelybookish Agreed. There were some significant victories but some disappointments too. Much work to be done! 6y
BarbaraBB I so agree. I really don‘t understand it 6y
Samplergal Because they too are racist and don‘t have a world view. I live in the good part of Florida. But I see it here too. More work. 6y

arubabookwoman @Samplergal I think I am coming to accept that, but it is so disheartening that there are so many racist and/or ignorant people. I was really hoping that a lot of people who voted trump/repub in 2016 would heed the evidence of the last 2 yrs and mend their ways. Voter suppression and gerrymandering doesn't help either. 6y
Bookwomble I've felt the same dumbfoundedness and amazement after every political vote since 2010. I think that because I don't subscribe to right-wing news sources, I don't see the inflammatory stories and opinions that big chunks of the populace are seemingly exposed to. I've tried to step outside my "echo-chamber", but feel too polluted to stay out of it very long. 6y
arubabookwoman @Bookwomble I become too angry/sick to watch/read right-wing news sources-I can't stand the lies and hype. As to the people who rely on these sources, I find that I can't deal with their ignorance and belief of outright lies. I know we're supposed to talk to the other side, and try to compromise, but when 1 side is in Lala Land, I prefer not to engage. 6y
Graywacke Just sending sympathy and appreciation of the one little political post. Things look better today than just after the election, but it‘s still disturbing to see all this open embracement of racism and to know it‘s all out there waiting for 2020. 6y

This was on the 2005 sunshine state young reader‘s list and is a realistic fiction story, that would be great for shared reading. The book is split up into two main characters that tells the story from both points of view. A young girl is obsessed with the boy across the street, although he isn‘t interested. Their family dynamics are drastically different, and once the girl believes that the boy isn‘t all that he finally starts to take an interest

This realistic book teaches so many life lessons! Let's not forget the romance. Flipped was definitely a favorite growing up. Julie was exactly the type of girl I wanted to be, passionate and unwavering. In the end it was the love Julie had for herself, that made bryce flip the script.

I went to a Montessori school, funds were always short. Every time the library would get a set of brand new books kids would flock to get them. The boys abandoned the book after reading the description. The girls on the other hand went bat sh*t over it. But I was set on not reading a love story. Fast forward to 9th grade. I'm out with an old friend. She gives me the book tells me "You're not someone who believes in easy love, read it."

Sharanya I LOVE this book. One of my top 5 MG Books, easily 😍 8y

I am not much of a romantic and I rarely read love stories, but this one is quite special! It's the sweet pure first love between two little children. She loved him, he thought she was weird and then just like that he ... Flipped! ❤

PS: There is a movie as well and it's truly charming with adorable actors! If you can watch it, just do; it's a sweet bonus! 😉

It's easy to look back and see it, and it's easy to give the advice. But the sad fact is, most people don't look beneath the surface until it's too late.

Flipped is not just purely fluff, it's deeper than what I've expected because it conveys great messages that serve as an inspiration to the readers. Full review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1171028296?book_show_action=false
