Corrections in Ink
Corrections in Ink: A Memoir | Keri Blakinger
7 posts | 9 read | 11 to read
Corrections in Ink is an electric and unforgettable memoir about a young woman's journeyfrom the ice rink, to addiction and a prison sentence, to the newsroomemerging with a fierce determination to expose the broken system she experienced. An elite, competitive figure skater growing up, Keri Blakinger poured herself into the sport, even competing at nationals. But when her skating partnership ended abruptly, her world shattered. With all the intensity she saved for the ice, she dove into self-destruction. From her first taste of heroin, the next nine years would be a blurliving on the streets, digging for a vein, selling drugs and sex, eventually plunging off a bridge when it all became too much, all while trying to hold herself together enough to finish her degree at Cornell. Then, on a cold day during Keri's senior year, the police stopped her. Caught with a Tupperware container full of heroin, she was arrested and ushered into a holding cell, a county jail, and finally into state prison. There, in the cruel "upside down, Keri witnessed callous conditions and encountered women from all walks of lifewomen who would change Keri forever. Two years later, Keri walked out of prison sober and determined to make the most of the second chance she was givenan opportunity impacted by her privilege as a white woman. She scored a local reporting job and eventually moved to Texas, where she started covering nothing other than: prisons. Now, over her career as an award-winning journalist, she has dedicated herself to exposing the broken system as only an insider could. Not just a story about getting out and getting off drugs, this rich memoir is about finding redemption within yourself, as well as from the outside world, and the power of second chances. Written in a searing voice, Corrections in Ink is told with unflinching honesty and jolts of irreverent humor, and uncovers a dark and brutal system that affects us all.

This was a compelling read/listen. Blakinger‘s personal story is intense, trauma-filled, and privilege-aware, and it merits a content warning/quick check of The StoryGraph or similar if you avoid certain topics. Her writing is fantastic, and I‘ve recently enjoyed following her on social media due to her deep commitment to raising awareness about/promoting change within the incarceration system.

#UnpopularOpinion Ive seen many glowing reviews for this memoir but I never fully warmed to Keri. As a competitive pairs skater her life was full of discipline and determination yet the minute she was presented with a setback she did a complete 180. I had a difficult time understanding her decisions & mindset. I applaud her honesty and the ability to come back from the brink of hell and once again turn her life around.👇🏼

Cinfhen Kudos for using her privilege and knowledge to speak up and represent those who are still struggling with addiction and incarceration. #ScriptOnTheSpine

Bluebird Congrats on completing the prompt! 2y
squirrelbrain I really liked this one, but listened to it so maybe that made a difference? 2y
Cinfhen It was definitely me @squirrelbrain I think I read so many memoirs that I was holding up this one against others which isn‘t really fair 2y
Megabooks Sorry this wasn‘t a win for you! 2y
Megabooks I was definitely over memoirs for the second half of 2022. #burnoutISreal 2y
Cinfhen It‘s always weird to review a memoir @Megabooks especially when it doesn‘t resonate with you 😟 2y

The author‘s life swings from successful teenage ice-skating, to drug addiction, to Cornell University then to jail.

This was a really interesting listen; I learned a lot about the prison system in the US, even though the author was very aware that her white privilege meant that her experience was better than most.

My only slight niggle was the jumpy timeline, perhaps more difficult on audio to figure out where in her life we were.

squirrelbrain Thanks for sending me this Holly @Hooked_on_books - I listened to some of it on the 2.5 hour drive to Gladstone‘s then finished it on a beautiful audio walk this morning! 😘 2y
Megabooks I can see what you‘re saying about the timeline. Great review! 2y
Hooked_on_books You‘re so welcome! I‘m so jealous of all the reading retreat pics. It looks amazing! And now I‘m curious to look for this book as well. I know life often doesn‘t turn out the way we expect, but that concept sure seems magnified for this author! 2y
squirrelbrain We‘re having a lovely time Holly @Hooked_on_books - I have to go home today though. 😞 Stopping for Sunday lunch though, and most Littens are staying another night. 2y

My IRL book group chose this one and all agreed it‘s harrowing and bleak. The author is from our hometown and some group members have connections to her family. If you love a memoir where the MC starts out privileged but bottoms out, then this is for you. Despite that, Blakinger has focus and drive amidst the chaos and is now an advocate for the (current or formerly) incarcerated.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Counting this for #imanathlete on the #nonfictionchallenge2022 bingo board, since the author was a competitive figure skater in her childhood and teen years. The pressures of competing didn‘t help her addictive nature one bit. @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa That totally works for me! 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks! I was planning something different, of course. But sheesh, it‘s already practically October! (edited) 2y

Initially I picked this up wanting another female POV for a behind bars themed program but it quickly became more than that. I have heard the term functioning alcoholic but hadn't considered the realm of a functioning drug addict. Straight from a promising athletic childhood into eating disorders and illegal drugs Keri had experienced a 180° pivot. Addressing not only privilege but also expounding on so many things wrong with the American...

MaggieCarr ...justice system it lights a fire under me for those who find themselves in the endless roulette riddle of day to day life as a woman behind bars. I'm disgusted all over again (started with Period Power and Orange Is The New Black) by how menstruating humans can be on view and treated when attempting to care for themselves. But not only that but the barriers set in place likey to change with any whim of staff. I can't promise you this is a... 2y

Keri went from being a nationally ranked pairs skater and Ivy League student to heroin addict/dealer and felon. This is better than a typical addiction or prison memoir, though. While she digs deeply into her own memories and experiences, she also shares stories and insights from her years as a prison and death penalty beat reporter for two newspapers. Recommended!

squirrelbrain Sounds fascinating- stacked! 3y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain it was really interesting, and I‘m sure prison in the UK is quite different than here, too. 3y
