Only on the Weekends | Dean Atta
8 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
From the Stonewall Awardwinning author of The Black Flamingo comes a romantic coming-of-age novel in verse about the beautifuland sometimes painfulfallout of pursuing the love we deserve. The ideal next read for fans of Kacen Callender, Elizabeth Acevedo, and Becky Albertalli. Fifteen-year-old Mack is a hopeless romanticlikely a hazard of growing up on film sets thanks to his fathers job. Mack has had a crush on Karim for as long as he can remember and he cant believe it when gorgeous, popular Karim seems into him too. But when Macks father takes on a new directing project in Scotland, Mack has to move away, and soon discovers how painful long-distance relationships can be. Its awful to be so far away from Karim, and its made worse by the fact that Karim can be so hard to read. Then Mack meets actor Finlay on set, and the world turns upside down again. Fin seems fearlessand his confidence could just be infectious. Award-winning author Dean Atta crafts a beautifully nuanced and revelatory story in verse about the exquisite highs and lows of first love and self-discovery.

A fast read, which might won't stay with me for long. But I think it's still a good book, since it can help young queers to navigate life. Showing them options and possibilities, and what may lay ahead. This might've been Dean Atta's attempt all along.

PuddleJumper I'm waiting for my copy from the library. It sounds fun 1mo
Jari-chan @PuddleJumper It is. I liked the audiobook quite a lot. 1mo

My goal is to finish both of these by Sunday night. I'm about 1/2 through Mickey 7 and I have about 100 pages left on Way Station. Easy Peasy.

vivastory I read Mickey 7 a couple of months ago. I liked it. Kinda annoyed to hear that the adaptation has been moved back a year. Not really surprised though because i'm sure they don't want to have to compete w/ Dune pt 2 7mo
RamsFan1963 @vivastory Who is playing Mickey? As I listen to the audio, I've been trying to imagine who'd be right for the part. 7mo
vivastory I think Robert Pattinson is playing Mickey 7mo

RamsFan1963 @vivastory Ugh!! Really? Okay that's definitely NOT how I've been picturing Mickey. I was thinking more Daniel Radcliff or even Ryan Gosling. I've only seen Pattinson in dramas, never saw his Batman movie, the actor playing Mickey needs a solid comic touch, and I don't see that in him. 7mo
vivastory I did like the most recent Batman, but I agree that it needs a comic touch. I'm not sure how much it will go in that direction since it's a Joon-ho movie & he tends towards the bleak. 7mo
RamsFan1963 @vivastory That would be disappointing, the humor is part of the book's charm. I'd hate to see it reduced to some grim depressing, shoot'em up. 7mo

This was alright…. I enjoyed his previous book more, but the verse didn‘t always work for me here. I also felt like there wasn‘t enough of K- too much left out of his story, so he ended up flat which is unfortunate. Loved Fin, but then that got going a little too fast…. Oh well. Can‘t love ‘em all #ispybingo: purple clothing

Clwojick Good job! 💜 2y

Dean Atta‘s LGBTQ+ YA novel frames a coming-of-age story within a romance to interesting effect. The economy of Atta‘s verse format works really well to highlight the emotional state of the characters and the gulf between them and Atta sensitively handles the difficulties of being gay within some communities. That said, Mack‘s economic privilege and the disparity between him and K never gets called on and the ending does one boy a disservice.

I really enjoyed this book. It gave me the perspective of just how hard LGBTQ+ community have it and trying to come out to the people they know. The fear of being judged or criticized for who they are. This was an easy read and I really enjoyed it. It dealt with two guys one who is openly gay and another one who isn‘t ready to come out just yet. The dealing with school and families. And how being somebody secret can be really hard mentally.

Some novels in verse, I like listening to the audio, but Dean Atta's work often does such interesting things visually, that I enjoy the text. This story of a teen who falls in love with an only partially out classmate and then goes to Scotland where he meets a wildly out teen and has to decide what he wants, is great. For #RippedBodiceBingo, can be used for bicycle and architect.
