Anna: The Biography | Amy Odell
7 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 2 to read
This definitive biography of Anna Wintour chronicles the steep climb of an ambitious young woman who would, with singular and legendary focus, become the most powerful woman in media. As a child, Anna Wintour was a tomboy with no apparent interest in clothing but, seduced by the miniskirts and bob haircuts of swinging 1960s London, she grew into a fashion-obsessed teenager. Her father, an influential newspaper editor, loomed large in her life, and once he decided she should become editor in chief of Vogue, she never looked back. Impatient to start her career, she left high school and got a job at a trendy boutique in Londonan experience that would be the first of many defeats. Undeterred, she found work in the competitive world of magazines, eventually moving to New York to leave behind the association with her well-known father. Before long, Annas journey to Vogue became a battle to ascend, no matter who or what stood in her way. Once she was crowned editor in chiefin one of the stormiest transitions in fashion magazine historyshe continued the fight to retain her enviable position, ultimately rising to dominate all of Cond Nast. Based on extensive interviews with Anna Wintours closest friends and collaborators, including some of the biggest names in fashion, journalist Amy Odell has crafted the most revealing portrait of Wintour ever published. Weaving Annas personal story into a larger narrative about the hierarchical dynamics of the fashion industry and the complex world of Cond Nast, Anna charts the relentless ambition of the woman who would become an icon.

I couldn‘t sleep last night so I decided to finish this one. I‘ve been trying to do better about reading nonfiction and next year that is going to be a reading challenge I do for myself. Kinda wish I‘d saved this one for that but it‘s all good. This was a really well written and insightful read. It‘s also part of Time magazine #Times100bestreadsof2022

Megabooks I initially passed on this, but I‘m very interested in your review! 2y
Cinfhen So far it‘s what I was expecting @Megabooks I like Imogen Church and she‘s doing a good job of narrating but the book is told in third person - meaning this reads more like expose so far. 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was fun, and very much in keeping with my current streak of gossipy nonfiction. I know very little about Anna Wintour except for the character based on her from The Devil Wears Prada., but thought the author did a nice job of fairly portraying her and putting some of her decisions in context. If you also enjoy gossipy nonfiction, this is worth a read!

Ever since I was a teen and devoured fashion magazines, my dream job was to be the editor of Vogue Magazine (USA). It was Anna Wintour‘s dream job as well. This is a well researched book about what it takes to make that happen, and what is necessary to hold on to that crown. Her father was a prominent journalist, and she wanted him to be proud. A peek into the life of corporate wealth where your wildest ideas come to life. I loved it! #booked2022

“Developing a creative eye or developing taste,I think that‘s something that you have within you from a very early age but it is also something you can develop through exposure to culture, to the arts, through reading, visiting museums, looking at what‘s going on in the world around you.
Creative exposure, cultural exposure, I think it is so important to spend as much time on that as you possibly can.”

“Anna was also particular about the food, though at tastings, she barely tasted. “She would make sure it looked beautiful,”said Winston Wolkoff. She banned chives, garlic, onions, and parsley, which get stuck in your teeth and make your breath smell.”
