The language & snowy atmosphere of this weird & ambitious sci fi novel immediately grabbed me. The voice is so exciting and unique, the set up bleak and Gothic, complete w/a cast of unsavory noblepeople. Like Mexican Gothic, it‘s a contemporary ex. of the genre‘s enduring relevance.

I wld‘ve loved to waller in the mood of the 1st 1/3, but it takes a turn that is less interesting both philosophically and narratively. Towards the end, it dragged.

"[The dog] leaps through the snow as easily as air, eyes and nose a lively threesome of black dots against the endless white."

"A thousand flecks of light burst from the burning château, and a wave of dogs pours after it, churning whitely like milk boiling over the rim of a pot."

""That is the problem with autonomous bodies," I mutter. "They all think they‘re the only one.""

I moved almost 900 miles north in the winter, and this book is making me feel much less cold.

I should‘ve bailed early on, but I had read such good reviews that I kept going, thinking it‘d get better. It did in some places, but overall…meh. It‘s kind of a mess of a story, could‘ve been a lot creepier. I guess it‘s gothic horror? 🤷‍♀️

This was a great gothic tale with intense descriptions and a strange, yet satisfying narrator that had a unique perspective on the world. I don't want to give away too much because part of the enjoyment with this creepy tale is the unraveling of what is happening.

I'll admit, it took me about 20 pages to get into the rhythm of the language, but after that I was hooked.

I'm only a few pages into this one but it is suitably creepy, mysterious, and the writing is sooo good

I'm SO CLOSE to finishing my audiobook then my kid loses my headphones 😭.

Think gothic sci-fi Wuthering Heights retelling and voila you have this book. I must say for me it‘s a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ reading simply because this really isn‘t my cuppa (sci-fi) genre wise. HOWEVER, with that said it did keep me interested enough I wanted to see how it ended. For those who are sci-fi fans y‘all will probably love this book! For me it was a solid read that won‘t make the keeper shelf hence the rating.

The narrator of this scalpel sharp, intoxicatingly gross debut is a parasite about to meet its match in the battle for control over humankind. Fans of gothic lit, haunted mansions in disrepair, and bio/medical horror, eat your optic nerve—I mean, your heart—out! I don‘t consider myself a fan of the above, but the incredibly unique narrator, the atmospheric world-building, and the both chillingly creepy & chillingly cold setting really hooked me.

This story turned out to be about so much more than I anticipated!

It is a very descriptive medical horror - definitely had to look up a few words😂 But below the surface it hits harder - it‘s also a story about strength, about losing one‘s self and the struggle to find it again🫣

What begins as a very clinical story, ends equally personal. In story and in writing style, which I really liked.
