In the Shadow of Lightning | Brian McClellan

From Brian McClellan, author of The Powder Mage trilogy, comes the first novel in the Glass Immortals series, In the Shadow of Lightning, an epic fantasy where magic is a finite resource--and it's running out. Excellent worldbuilding and a truly epic narrative combine into Brian's finest work to date. Heartily recommended to anyone who wants a new favorite fantasy series to read.--Brandon Sanderson Demir Grappo is an outcast--he fled a life of wealth and power, abandoning his responsibilities as a general, a governor, and a son. Now he will live out his days as a grifter, rootless, and alone. But when his mother is brutally murdered, Demir must return from exile to claim his seat at the head of the family and uncover the truth that got her killed: the very power that keeps civilization turning, godglass, is running out. Now, Demir must find allies, old friends and rivals alike, confront the powerful guild-families who are only interested in making the most of the scraps left at the table and uncover the invisible hand that threatens the Empire. A war is coming, a war unlike any other. And Demir and his ragtag group of outcasts are the only thing that stands in the way of the end of life as the world knows it. Powerful rival families, murderous conspiracies, epic battles, larger-than-life characters, and magic.--Fonda Lee, author of The Green Bone Saga Engaging, fast-paced and epic.--James Islington, author of In The Shadow of What Was Lost Clever, fun, and by turns beautifully bloody, In the Shadow of Lightning hits like a bolt through a stained glass window.--Megan E. O'Keefe, author of Chaos Vector

So good. Giddy with excitement, oh no you didn‘t oh yes you did, I want more please don‘t let the book end good. Fantastic worldbuilding, fascinating magic system built around the manipulation of glass & magic as a finite resource, complex, flawed characters, not to mention secrets, lies, betrayal, conspiracy & that‘s just the tip of the iceberg. A few aspects are a little neat & tidy but I can‘t wait for the next book! Excellent start to finish.

Ohh, this is good…like “I‘m only a third of the way through but I want to peek at the end to make sure everyone makes it to the end because this is clearly a book in which that doesn‘t seem likely” good. Needless to say, I‘m enjoying the book even as I worry about the characters and what might happen.

This is easily one of the best fantasy novels of this type that I‘ve ever read. There‘s also an insight that I had that might explain the appeal of fantasy and magic with a lot of people. It‘s that it gives good reasons why some people are treated in such unequal ways in society. Our human societies on earth don‘t really justify it nearly as well, it‘s accepted for the most part because of tradition without a lot of rational reasoning.

Too cold to sit outside today, but that's no hardship right now!

I'm not much of an epic fantasy reader, but this book is surprisingly enjoyable to me.

Wow-what a start to a new epic fantasy series! My 1st experience with the author, I‘m certain it won‘t be my last! The book opens on the battlefield with Demir, dubbed “The Lightning Prince”, & his 1st victory. But his triumph is short-lived; he spends the next 9 years in a self-imposed exile. But he returns to the center of the Empire & its politics after the murder of his mother. Reunited with old friends, he soon finds a secret steeped in blood

Suet624 You managed to cover a lot in this review!! Nice work. 😊 2y
TorieStorieS @Suet624 Thanks- I did have to leave off my ending punctuation though… 😳 2y
Suet624 @TorieStorieS Hahaha. Folks use lots of tricks to try to squeeze in words. :) 2y

TorieStorieS @Suet624 I appreciate the limit in its help to make me more succinct!!🤣 2y
Twainy I also liked this book. I tried Powder Mage and didn‘t get beyond the 1st chapter so I was afraid to try this. I don‘t regret it. It‘s a great start to a series that first win then crush was visceral. 2y
TorieStorieS @Twainy Oh- I was curious about that series after reading this one- but maybe I will skip it then! Thanks for the heads up! 2y
