This was an interesting read, it had its moments where I was throughly engaged with the story, but it felt.flat at times when there were battle engagements overall 3.5 stars.
Jack Campbell has built a brilliant universe for these stories and populated it with people who are at once alien and familiar. Best of all - his chief hero, John 'Black Jack' Geary, is powerful, intelligent, charismatic and (certainly so far at least) unproblematic! He judges people on their merit, treats people fairly and hasn't taken advantage of the hero worship that his legend affords him.

This was a bit hard to get into at first what with all the vocabulary. I was also expecting it to be a lot more flashy in a way but I ended up enjoying the slower pace. I had some issues with the translation but then again when don‘t I these days😂 I‘ll definitely keep reading the series at some point when the libraries open again and I can actually get the second part. #translatedbooks
Time for some late night cake and reading! After finishing Gods Behaving Badly I decided to continue with Dauntless as my dining table book since it was the only hardcover that I was already reading. Maybe I can finally finish it and get it out of my currently reading pile😂🪐 #translatedbooks
Lately I‘ve really been all over the place with my reading and other life stuff as well. I want to read everything at the same time which makes me start too many books without finishing any. I‘m also feeling like fantasy and scifi at the moment so I just couldn‘t resist starting this any longer. #translatedbooks
Thus far, an enjoyable military sci-fi. Captain John Geary is found in a rescue pod nearly a century after the battle that destroyed his ship, only to discover that his "last stand" has become the stuff of legend and he is invoked as a hero by every Alliance schoolchild.
Deep in enemy territory, in command of a fleet that is weary, limping and inexperienced, Geary will have to live up to his own legend to bring his ships home...
🚀Fantastically written military SF w/ smart, tactical space encounters.
🚀Flawed MC w/struggles that realistically complement situation/scenarios involving his existence.
🚀Thought-provoking exploration of how long wars affect human psyche.
🚀Slow pacing that's comfortable due to nature of plot.
🚀Slightly similar to BSG.
🚀Recommended for fans of military SF involving complex wartime strategies & plenty technical science & engineering.
🚀4.5/5
This is SO damn good so far and brilliant. Wonderful mesh of real sciences and galactic political intrigue. Reminds me a bit of the Battlestar Galactica (2004) series. It's just fantastic military sci-fi.

Starting my first galactic novel in 387 years. I'm so excited!! I've missed hard sci-fi so much!
The 1st in a series, this book follows Cap'n Black Jack. Presumed to have died 100 years ago in an infamous war, when Cap'n Black Jack shows up, lots of people are astounded. Shortly after his return, he's assigned command over the Alliance fleet to combat aliens trying to annihilate humans.

Extremely well done military space opera. First in the series and would be a great read for any fan of Battlestar Galactica. Took just a slight amount of time to acquaint the brain with the terminology and the world as the story just gets on with it right away but my enjoyment of the book only increased as I continued to read. Looking forward to the next installment!
Holy crap guys, talk about a good start to a series. I'm not a huge fan of military science fiction but if they all were as good as this, I wouldn't read anything else. Characters that actually have some depth to them besides "I get to shoot things HOORAH" (nothing necessarily wrong with that but I digress), probably the most thought put into space combat I have ever read, no romance just to have it. A quick but excellent read for sci-fi fans.
Between reading Dauntless and playing No Man's Sky (art above), I have been craving good science fiction. I have Caves of Steel on hold through Overdrive but I'm curious if there is any good sci-fi my fellow bookworms can recommend for an Alaskan with a month of rain ahead of him.
