The Diary of a Teenage Girl
The Diary of a Teenage Girl: An Account in Words and Pictures | Phoebe Gloeckner
First released in 2002, this provocative, critically acclaimed novel is now a major motion picture starring Bel Powley, Kristen Wiig, and Alexander Skarsgrd. "I don't remember being born. I was a very ugly child. My appearance has not improved so I guess it was a lucky break when he was attracted by my youthfulness." So begins the wrenching diary of Minnie Goetze, a fifteen-year-old girl longing for love and acceptance and struggling with her own precocious sexuality. After losing her virginity to her mother's boyfriend, Minnie pursues a string of sexual encounters (with both boys and girls) while experimenting with drugs and developing her talents as an artist. Unsupervised and unguided by her aloof and narcissistic mother, Minnie plunges into a defenseless, yet fearless adolescence. While set in the libertine atmosphere of 1970s San Francisco, Minnie's journey to understand herself and her world is universal: this is the story of a young woman troubled by the discontinuity between what she thinks and feels and what she observes in those around her. Acclaimed cartoonist and author Phoebe Gloeckner serves up a deft blend of visual and verbal narrative in her complex presentationof a pivotal year in a girl's life, recounted in diary pages and illustrations, with full narrative sequences in comics form. The Diary of a Teenage Girl offers a searing comment on adult society as seen though the eyes of a young woman on the verge of joining it. This edition has been updated by the author with an introduction reflecting on the book's critical reception and value as diary or novel, historical document or work of art. Also included in this revised edition are supplementary photographs and illustrations from the author's childhood, including some of her own diary entries. "Phoebe Gloeckner... is creating some of the edgiest work about young women's lives in any medium."--The New York Times "One of the most brutally honest, shocking, tender and beautiful portrayals of growing up female in America."--Salon "It's the most honest depiction of sexuality in a long, long time; as a meditation onadolescence, it picks up a literary ball that's been only fitfully carried after Salinger."--Nerve.com

Raw and affecting, and hard to read, but somehow also a kind of narrative that feels effortless to read because of how the words and art are constructed. Very unique and memorable.

I LOVED this book! It's set in the 1970s and follows a 15 year old girl through her life. The subject matter is pretty sad and there was a lot of "oh my god" moments for me but I still loved it ??

You guys should definitely check out this movie as well, it has Alexander Skarsgård in all his hunky goodness ?

*Ignore my needy cat* I picked this book up in NYC last month, virtually knowing nothing about it. I almost NEVER buy a book on a whim. My must-buy list is too long 😂 But excited to check it out!!

Part graphic novel, part epistolary novel, this was a bit hard to read at times because of the absolute rawness of Minnie and her life. It seemed so unflinchingly real, and spoke to my own self as a teenager, mostly in a way I would rather forget. This won't be for everyone, but it is illuminating to the way teenagers act and feel.

wonga i'll have to check this out since i really liked the movie! 🎥 👍 8y

I got in just about as much reading time as I hoped for one day. It's unseasonably warm this weekend so I wanted to make sure that my kids got to spend some time outside. I read whenever possible though and finished three books and read portions of two more, as well as reading two serial issues this morning. We'll see what tomorrow holds! I hope everyone else had an excellent day too! #24in48

Oooh, this graphic #epistolary novel (and the film that stemmed from it) came in like a wrecking ball and wre-eh-ecked me when I read it last fall. This book's unflinching perspective on the sexuality and coming of age of a teen girl made me want to hug her and clap for her at the same time. It is unflinching and heartfelt. Some parts were hard to read, but it's an important book for women to have access to. #readjanuary

RiotMom So good! Did you see the film version? 8y
courtney @RiotMom yes! I loved it (even though it put me in the weirdest contemplative mood) 8y
RiotMom Yeah, it was definitely that kind of film. I loved Bel Powell in that role, though. She was perfect! 8y

beaniebankbeth I read Diary of a Teenage Girl for a college class. It is incredible. The author was at one point anatomical artist, whose job was to draw for medical textbooks, and it definitely shows. 8y

Lots of fucked up things happen to Minnie, and yet she is so full of agency and will and emotion. What a ride.

After watching the movie adaptation of this book and falling in love with the movie I bought to book. And I am so glad I have it is so good, the best coming of age book I have read. So brutally honest and beautiful. At the end of the movie it says "For all the girls who have grown." That is all there is to be said.

Reviewsbylola This looks great!! 8y
Cortg I loved the movie...I'll have to read the book low! 8y
TheLazyReader @Cortg You should definitely read it. I am also desperately fallowing Marian Heller who directed the movie to see if she will be directing anything else. It was her first movie can you believe it? 8y

Squalor is cozy to me and I love to place myself in situations of potential danger. My recklessness does not please me. I know that my sordid tastes are the expression of a death -- I want to punish myself -- I want to punish other people -- I long to be alone but I long to be loved. The pain I feel is leading me into darkness.

"I feel so awkward and ugly and naive and lonely. Maybe I should kill myself maybe I should paint a picture. I always want to be touched. I don't know what's wrong with me." I wish I had read this book when I was younger, although now is good too. I think any age is the right time to read it.
