Lemon: A Novel | Kwon Yeo-Son

NAMED A MOST-ANTICIPATED BOOK OF THE YEAR BY MS. MAGAZINE AND CRIMEREADS Parasite meets The Good Son in this piercing psychological portrait of three women haunted by a brutal, unsolved crime. In the summer of 2002, when Korea is abuzz over hosting the FIFA World Cup, eighteen-year-old Kim Hae-on is killed in what becomes known as the High School Beauty Murder. Two suspects quickly emerge: rich kid Shin Jeongjun, whose car Hae-on was last seen in, and delivery boy Han Manu, who witnessed her there just a few hours before her death. But when Jeongjuns alibi checks out, and no evidence can be pinned on Manu, the case goes cold. Seventeen years pass without any resolution for those close to Hae-on, and the grief and uncertainty take a cruel toll on her younger sister, Da-on, in particular. Unable to move on with her life, Da-on tries in her own twisted way to recover some of what shes lost, ultimately setting out to find the truth of what happened. Shifting between the perspectives of Da-on and two of Hae-ons classmates struck in different ways by her otherworldly beauty, Lemon ostensibly takes the shape of a crime novel. But identifying the perpetrator is not the main objective here: Kwon Yeo-sun uses this well-worn form to craft a searing, timely exploration of privilege, jealousy, trauma, and how we live with the wrongs we have endured and inflicted in turn.

This novella is told in alternating perspectives of three woman remembering a murder that happened when they were in high school. But the story doesn‘t focus on revealing the killer, though I think there‘re clues everywhere. Chapters read like stream of consciousness, give us insights into the characters‘ minds and I was quite confused with the switching perspectives. The characters are dealing with grief, guilt that haunt them over the years, ⬇️

erzascarletbookgasm …and trying to make sense of life after the tragedy. It‘s also a look at class, beauty, and gender in Korea. I find it a bleak read, and I‘m still not sure who did it. #tbrtarot 2y

This was a beautiful little novella about how a teen girl's murder affected her sister and two classmates. It's not really a whodunnit or even really a crime story, it's more of a story about how we process grief and guilt, but there's definitely a little revenge mixed in.

The aftermath of a high school beauty murder. I liked the clean writing style & gentle tone. The structure of 3 narrators all in first person took me a while to get into & I found it too oblique at times with things left unspoken & events shrouded in mystery. But it‘s beautifully executed & the characters feel authentic.

We got all the snow! ❄❄❄ While I sadly did not get the hoped for snow day - the library did have a delayed opening until this afternoon! So I'm enjoying a cozy morning cuddling with Chaplin as I read this slice of a book! ❤📖❤ #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #chaplin

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
I‘ve seen this book described as a mystery and a thriller, but I think it‘s good to know going in that 1) there is a mystery, but solving it is not the focus, and 2) it‘s not a fast-paced thrill ride. I enjoyed its focus on the characters and how they each faced what happened, but I felt like it was too short. There was a lot that could have been expanded on, and I kind of wish the author had taken that route.
