All the Seas of the World
All the Seas of the World | Guy Gavriel Kay
15 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
On a dark night, along a lonely stretch of coast, a small merchant ship sends two people ashore to a stony strand. Their purpose is assassination. They have been hired by two of the most dangerous men alive. The consequences of what follows will affect lives both great and small, and possibly alter the balance of power in the world. One of those arriving on that night strand is a woman abducted by corsairs from her home as a child. Escaping that life, that destiny, years after, she is trying to chart her own course - and is bent upon revenge. A third figure on the ship that night is a man who still remembers being exiled as a child with his family from their home, for their faith. A moment that never leaves him. He will bring the other two out from the city, if they can somehow do what they are headed there to do, and live. All the Seas of the World forms a thematic centrepiece to international bestseller Guy Gavriel Kay's two most recent novels, A Brightness Long Ago and Children of Earth and Sky. Returning triumphantly to his near-Renaissance world, Kay deploys his signature 'quarter turn to the fantastic' to present readers with a vividly memorable set of characters in a story of vengeance, power, and love, built around profoundly contemporary themes of exile and memory.

This historical fantasy novel by one of my favourite authors returns to his alternate Renaissance setting. It contains references to earlier characters and events but works perfectly as a standalone story.

The audiobook is beautifully read by Simon Vance, who has narrated most if not all of GGK's novels. Honestly, I couldn't image anyone else reading them.

Friends, I‘m reading this great book too damned slowly. I spent some time with it over my very healthy breakfast and haven‘t had another shot at it until now, at almost 10:00 pm. Poop. I really need to carve out a good, long reading period tomorrow. Y‘all know I enjoy things less when I read them slowly, no matter how solid they are, and I‘ve gotta worry about the due date besides.

Last night I finally realized my dream of drinking beer out of a glass shaped like a boot. It was glorious, and this bottle of 3 Monts? Delicious. I‘ve been drunk before, and I‘ve been delighted before, but never before has a beer made me so delightfully drunk.

Unfortunately, it also made me SUPER SLEEPY, so I couldn‘t binge-read the tagged book OR finish the Sandman adaptation like I planned to. Gonna make up for that tonight.

Nutmegnc That‘s quite a dream come true!! 🤣 2y
xicanti @Nutmegnc you gotta love a great expression (“Fill your boots!”) made literal. 2y
Nutmegnc @xicanti no kidding! Also love that book. Just started that and the Sandman adaptation!! Love both!! 2y

Dilara Seeing this beer bottle here has made me all warm inside. I don‘t drink but my partner likes a nice beer or ale, and he quite enjoyed the 3 monts that was waiting for us in the gîte fridge when we spent a week‘s holiday in Northern France back in June. He brought a couple home but they‘re all gone now. 2y
xicanti @Dilara I‘ll definitely buy it again, but next time I‘ll divide the bottle up into two or three portions unless I‘ve eaten quite a bit that day. It went down very easy! 2y
Dilara @xicanti Ah actually, I've just been informed I got the wrong beer 😅 😳. It wasn't 3 monts but 2 caps! (Although he does like his 3 monts too, especially shared with a friend!) 2y
xicanti @Dilara I‘ll have to see if 2 Caps is available in Canada, too! 2y
Dilara @xicanti It would be great if it was, but they're a working farm/craft brewery and quite local, so I'm not sure... Their website is pretty (https://www.2caps.fr/), but it looks like it's all in French - no English version available - which is a good sign that they're too small to export. You might have to come and visit! 2y
xicanti @Dilara tasty beer strikes me as an excellent excuse to finally visit France! 2y

All Kay‘s alternate world novels stand alone (except for the two-book Sarantine Mosaic), but they all contain little callbacks to the others. I love moments like this one, which references Jehane from THE LIONS OF AL-RASSAN. Her name has been lost to history but she‘s still left her mark on the world.

I love the fierce MC Nadia, who was captured by pirates as a girl, sold into slavery, & then freed herself, which is where this immersive fantasy begins. It‘s a standalone, with ties to Kay‘s earlier novels set in the same alternate history Mediterranean & Middle Eastern world, where 3 religions parallel our 3 western faiths. Geopolitics, war & romance. Just a touch of the fantastical (which mainly serves as a plot device). Audio by Simon Vance.

“She read the world in his eyes” is the kind of cheesy romantic writing that makes me roll my eyes, but that‘s me. Fortunately, there‘s a lot more than romance going on in this novel.

TrishB Lol! Me too. 3y
