From debut author Kit Mayquist, a propulsive and atmospheric modern Gothic with all the splendor of The Great Gatsby . . . and all the secrets, lies, and darkness that opulence can hide. Med school dropout Lena is desperate for a job, any job, to help her parents, who are approaching bankruptcy after her father was injured and laid off nearly simultaneously. So when she is offered a position, against all odds, working for one of Boston's most elite families, the illustrious and secretive Verdeaus, she knows she must accept it--no matter how bizarre the interview or how vague the job description. By day, she is assistant to the family doctor and his charge, Jonathan, the sickly, poetic, drunken heir to the family empire, who is as difficult as his illness is mysterious. By night, Lena discovers the more sinister side of the family, as she works overtime at their lavish parties, helping to hide their self-destructive tendencies . . . and trying not to fall for Jonathan's alluring sister, Audrey. But when she stumbles upon the knowledge that the Verdeau patriarch is the one responsible for the ruin of her own family, Lena vows to get revenge--a poison-filled quest that leads her further into this hedonistic world than she ever bargained for, forcing her to decide how much--and who--she's willing to sacrifice for payback. The perfect next read for fans of Mexican Gothic, Tripping Arcadia is a page-turning and shocking tale with an unforgettable protagonist that explores family legacy and inheritance, the sacrifices we must make to get by in today's world, and the intoxicating, dangerous power of wealth.

A convoluted plot, unbelievable character motivation to make ridiculous decisions, no chemistry between the insta-love duo, and a plot that just wouldn't end. Ugh, this book was a gift, so I wanted to give it a fair shake, but I definitely should have DNF'd it. This was my June #Doublespin @TheAromaofBooks . At least I can check it off my Tbr pile.

TheAromaofBooks So disappointing when a book you've been anticipating doesn't end up being a match!!! 1y
Clare-Dragonfly I had high hopes but I just bailed on this. I read several more chapters than I should have hoping to get more queerness but I guess I was right not to keep trying 😂 1y

I was really into this and then I didn‘t love where it went, but still very readable and I wanted to know the end even if I didn‘t love the turns it took

Billed as a 'modern gothic' - I had my doubts, but it really does have all the tropes of a lush & twisty gothic tale! Rich beautiful doomed siblings, a cruel perverse heir-obsessed father, an outsider bent on revenge, a creepy country manor, & even a (wildly improbable) botanist aunt tending to Rappaccini's garden in Italy.

Sort of Crimson Peak meets Succession with a bit of Eyes Wide Shut thrown in for good measure. Emo & excessive - loved it!

This was a great modern Gothic novel. Lena an exmedical student gets a job as a doctor's assistant to a wealthy and disturbed family. There her main responsibility is helping take care of the son, Jonathan, who has some questionable health issues. Also the Dad is pretty much a monster.

Taking advantage of a day off to do nothing but sit on my bed and read. (If the wind backs off a little bit, I‘ll switch to my back porch!!) #trippingarcadia #kitmayquist

This book had such a great premise. I love gothic novels, however, the execution could have been better.

The book started off strong. The book held steady until the last 1/3. The story seemed to be losing its momentum by that point. By the end, I felt let down. I was expecting a big reveal or twist but nothing shocked me or made me have an “aha” moment.
