Things I Should Have Said
Things I Should Have Said | Jamie Lynn Spears
11 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
In this intimate memoir, actress and musician Jamie Lynn Spears opens up for the first time, telling her unfiltered story on her own terms. You've read the headlines, but you don't know Jamie Lynn Spears. The world first met Jamie Lynn as a child star, when it was her job to perform, both on set and for the press. She spent years escaping into different characters on All That and Zoey 101. But as she grew up, faced a teen pregnancy, raised her daughter on her own, pursued a career, and learned to stand on her own two feet, the real Jamie Lynn started to take center stage- a raw, blemished, and imperfect woman, standing in her own power. Despite growing up in one of America's most tabloid-famous families, Jamie Lynn has never told her story in her own words. In Things I Should Have Said, she talks frankly about the highs and lows, sharing what it was like traveling the world as a kid, how she moved into acting and performing herself, what life as a child star took from her, and the life-changing reality of becoming a teen mom. She talks about how she finally found love and how the mistakes she has made have taught her more than anything else. She also shares vulnerably about how the ATV accident that nearly took her daughter's life brought her back to her faith and caused her to reevaluate and redirect her life. Frank, courageous, and inspiring, Things I Should Have Said is a portrait of a wife, momma, sister, daughter, actress, and musician doing the best she could to show up for herself and teach her daughters to have the courage to love every part of themselves, too.

The memoir was agonizingly repetitive. I listened to the audiobook, and I really don't think I would have made it through on paper. What took nearly 6 hours to listen to could have easily been edited down to 2-3 hours.
I tried to be open-minded, but this book mostly confirmed what I already thought; being born into the dysfunction of the Spears family, and the giant machine of Britney's career, sowed the perfect seeds for narcissism.

dabbe #fanofthepan! 🤩🤩🤩 6mo
lil1inblue I listened to Britney's book: Jamie Lynn was portrayed as quite spoiled. Interesting that she comes off as narcissistic in her own memoir! 😅 6mo
Kristy_K I forgot she wrote a book. 6mo

Kris10H @lil1inblue I read Britney's as well, and I tried really hard to be impartial reading Jamie Lynn's, but she really told on herself in it. 6mo

I read this immediately following Britney's on purpose, and it's clear from more than just their appearance that they're sisters. Not sure I gained any valuable insight or information from either book, but I suppose there is a bit of perspective to be had from their experiences. #54-2023

LOL …. ok, goodreads. Well, this is a first. 🙄 And, piss off, Jamie Lynn. Your book was terrible.

wanderinglynn WTF is “unusual activity”? That sounds like a lot of BS. 13mo
Soubhiville Huh, that‘s weird. 13mo
Librarybelle I read somewhere that Goodreads was going “crackdown” on “unusual activity.” I think they may need a better system… 13mo

LeahBergen What?? 😠 13mo
britt_brooke @wanderinglynn @Soubhiville @Librarybelle @LeahBergen I read this during Britney‘s court battle over her conservatorship, so I guess that the “times of unusual activity.” I also slammed it pretty hard. (edited) 13mo
TieDyeDude Yeah, so Goodreads is trying to figure out a system to prevent internet bashing on books, like when blogs conspire to artificially lower a book's rating because they don't like the author or topic or just because they feel like being mean to someone. So, maybe a bunch of trolls decided to gang up on this book with negative reviews at the same time you posted an honest review, leading to a “time of unusual activity.“ 13mo
britt_brooke @TieDyeDude That‘s definitely a problem on goodreads, so that at least makes sense. Unfortunately for me, I really did read and dislike, this memoir. 😂😂 13mo
dabbe @britt_brooke I am totally convinced and will not read it! 🤩🤗🤣 13mo
britt_brooke @dabbe 😆😆 13mo
wanderinglynn @TieDyeDude that does make sense. But it seems like there might be a better way than delete every negative review. Then again, maybe not. 🤔 13mo
julesG Got an email about a book I rated with one star at the wrong time, too. 🙄🙄🙄🙄 And because I like causing trouble/work for Goodreads I responded and want my text so I can review the book again when the spam-elimination-process is over. 13mo
BarbaraBB I just notice you posted your review 2 years ago… and now it‘s been deleted? You‘d think GR has got better things to do. Like update their systems to avoid trolls 13mo
julesG @BarbaraBB That was my thought too, why waste time and resources? I'm also wondering, are they deleting 5-Star reviews from gushing fans, who haven't read the book (yet) too? 13mo
britt_brooke @BarbaraBB Totally agree!! 13mo
britt_brooke @julesG Haha, I like your thinking! I found my review here on litsy and took a screen shot. Maybe I‘ll do the same! And I was wondering the same about the 5 star reviews by folks who haven‘t read the book. Too many gray areas. Goodreads is in over their heads with this. 13mo

Pickpick

This was good-ish. I think her story is worth knowing within the larger context of Britney‘s story. I‘m also unnerved that she was so naive and sheltered- my goodness. Worth the short listen.

Yes it‘s repetitive and not well written- I think it could be a struggle in print.

Couldn‘t even finish it. Poorly written, repetitive and surface level. Wanted to love it, really didn‘t like it.

I am not good at book reviews, so I‘ll just throw out a few words to sum up my thoughts:

Boring. Inconsistent. Insincere. Unfocused. Flat. Bottom line: This is not a good book.

(On a positive note, here‘s my cat. #catsoflitsy)

RamsFan1963 I've yet to see anyone say ANYTHING positive about this book. I'm no Brittany fan, but I get the feeling this would piss me off anyway. 3y
Kris10H I want to read it, bit I refuse to buy it and support her...😔 Glad to know it's as bad as I would expect. 3y
Kerrbearlib @Kris10H It‘s pretty bad. I felt the same way you did about not wanting to support her. I borrowed the book from the library so I wouldn‘t have to spend money on it. 3y

⭐️⭐️ Curiosity got me, and somehow this was worse than expected. Anyone else forget Jamie Lynn was on Nickelodeon? I‘m the same age as Britney so I‘m claiming wrong demographic here. Surprising no one, this is horribly written. It smacks of blatant capitalization of big sister‘s media circus after years of riding her coattails. The chapter addressing Britney‘s conservatorship situation was petty and rude. I got my #Audible credit back!

Hooked_on_books Thanks for taking one for the team! 😂 3y
britt_brooke @Hooked_on_books 😂💁🏼‍♀️ 3y
LeahBergen I thought this would be a pretty foul read. 😆 3y

britt_brooke @LeahBergen You thought correct! I knew it would be bad, but it was remarkably terrible. 3y
rachelsbrittain Oof this sounds rough. As a younger sister, I'm appalled 3y
Cinfhen Someone was going to bite!!! Glad you got your credit back. And I totally remember Zoe101 because my youngest watched every morning before the school bus came. Some things you never forget. Poor Britney has been letdown by her ENTIRE family. I hope SHE pens her own memoir!!! 3y
britt_brooke @rachelsbrittain It was so poorly written, too. 3y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen I‘d read the heck out of a Britney memoir! 3y
Kerrbearlib I just downloaded the audiobook from the library and so far I am cringing. 3y
Bookzombie I second what @Hooked_on_books said! 😂 I would also gobble up a Britney memoir! @Cinfhen 3y
Cinfhen I hope she pens one sooner than later 🙏🏼 @Bookzombie @britt_brooke 3y
Hooked_on_books @britt_brooke @Cinfhen @Bookzombie I just heard on the For Real podcast that Britney has signed a deal for a tell-all book! I don‘t know when it‘s supposed to come out, but it‘s in the works! 3y
Cinfhen I saw that too @Hooked_on_books I think she‘s been offered 15 million dollars in advance!! 3y
britt_brooke @Hooked_on_books YESSS! I saw this and I am 100% here for it. @Cinfhen @Bookzombie (edited) 3y
Bookzombie @britt_brooke Me too! 🙂 3y
