The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story
The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story | Vivek J. Tiwary, Ancrew C. Robinson
8 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
The Fifth Beatle is the untold true story of Brian Epstein, the visionary manager who discovered and guided The Beatles-from their gigs in a tiny cellar in Liverpool to unprecedented international stardom. Yet more than merely the story of "The Man Who Made The Beatles," The Fifth Beatle is an uplifting, tragic, and ultimately inspirational human story about the struggle to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Brian himself died painfully lonely at the young age of thirty-two, having helped The Beatles prove through "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" that pop music could be an inspirational art form. He was homosexual when it was a felony to be so in the United Kingdom, Jewish at a time of anti-Semitism, and from Liverpool when it was considered just a dingy port town.

This book is stunningly beautiful and has many unique page layouts (which I love in comics)! I wasn't familiar with Epstein's history, so I learned a lot from the true parts of this book. The author does use some creative lisence such as adding Moxie to the story. I picked this up because it was a Bonus Borrow on Hoopla. #QueerHistory #Beatles #LGBTQ #MusicHistory #Nonfiction #Comic #JewishHistory

Mehso-so

As Tiwary writes in the afterword, he wanted to “reveal not just the facts but the poetry behind the Brian Epstein story.” Well, there is a lot of leeway taken with respect to some facts, which would stand out to Beatles fans. Nonetheless, I think the writing and art capture some of the loneliness and alienation Epstein must have felt in his life. What an extraordinary man he was, accomplishing so much, to his own detriment.

Bookwomble An older guy I used to work with formerly had a job as a salesperson at one of Epstein's Liverpool furniture store, NEMS, and recalled the Beatles hanging around before they hit the big time. He particular remembered John's cheeky charm 😊 2y
psalva @Bookwomble That‘s such a cool memory to have. There‘s a nice little scene in this with John carrying a stack of vinyl and claiming it‘s free because of a clause in their contract. 2y
Bookwomble @psalva He was a scamp, wasn't he! 2y

I was at the Eisner Awards w/ Dad in San Diego when "The Fifth Beatle" was up for 2 Eisners. (Think Oscars or Golden Globes of comics). It won "Best Reality-Based work" & was nominated for "Best Painter/Multimedia Artist (interior art)."

EC books has my & Dad's favorite Golden Age artists & short stories.

You know the reading slump is bad when you have 4 graphic novels STILL in shrink wrap & you got that Beatles book last summer... ??

A pick for those who have some familiarity with the Beatles' story. Some interesting artwork and variety of styles.

This graphic novel has some beautiful artwork. It is all about Brian Epstein the manager of The Beatles and what it took to make them famous. The Beatles play a side stage in much of this as the novel focuses on Epstein's sexuality and addiction to pills to "cure" him of his desires. The scene where he meets Colonel Parker is haunting. The artwork is the draw though. Don't get it digitally as there are lots of two page pieces.
