LitFest first session: Jerry Pinto and Paul McVeigh talk about writing family. McVeigh was giving a deeply moving talk on his life and his fictional account of growing up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. The fabulous Art Deco mirror in the background however was positioned *just* so that the La Source nude poured out her water jar just over his right shoulder every time the camera zoomed in... 😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂.

Im cheating a bit because im posting about the same book I've just reviewed perhaps in hope litsy will notice and put a proper description. However Mickey Donnelly the 11 year hero has a number of first kisses in this book including with the girl of his dreams although he is definitely confused about his sexuality.

Pickpick

I loved this story of Mickey Donnelly, a 11 year old boy in the summer between primary school and high school. In the height of the troubles Belfast is a dangerous place to grow up but Mickey seems oblivious living in his own make believe world whilst domestically he has to cope with domestic abuse, bullying, the IRA, and his emerging awareness of sexuality. The author captures the mind of an 11 yr old with joy and comedy contrasting deep emotion.

Starting this tonight and loving it so far, as we see 'the troubles' from the eyes of a 11 year old boy living in his own world while in the first couple of chapters a woman is tar and feathered, troops patrol the streets and sectarian tensions rise. I suspect this will be a book where humour makes sadness more poignant. Anyway this made me laugh a page after the scene of the woman above shocked me, a world of horror in a childs eye.

When i took a book back to the library today i ended up picking up these two books with a Belfast theme. The tagged book is one I've fancied reading for a while so this gave me a good excuse and is a book about a child in Belfast. The author of The plea Steve Cavanagh is a Belfast human rights lawyer and this is the 2nd of his NY courtroom thrillers and he is half of the excellent podcast Two crime writers + a microphone

I must read this. It's on Scribd, so there's no excuse. So many interesting sounding books, so little time.

Lupita.Reads That so much for sharing this! Adding it to the TBR list as well! 8y
quirkyreader Shawn you beat me to the punch on posting this. 🐸🐙 But that is a good thing. 8y

Given your interest in The Good Son, who's up for reading and discussing this together on Litsy? Say, in the first two weeks of December? Or beginning in January, or anytime later on?

BookishMarginalia Sounds good! January is better for me (I'm a teacher, and December is crazy with end of semester stuff!) 8y
TrishB @shawnmooney I'm up for it! If we say January I can add to my Christmas requests list! 8y
Lindy I'm up for a January discussion. 😊 8y
shawnmooney @Lupita.Reads @quirkyreader @BookishMarginalia @Lindy @becausetrains @BookishFeminist @TrishB Hey everybody, you may remember having vaguely agreed to read and discuss this together in January. I've decided to bow out of organizing any further Litsy discussions. (edited) 8y
shawnmooney I've done a few this year and they didn't really work out. People are busy, and it's difficult to coordinate reading schedules. So I'm going to "go rogue" with my reading schedule from here on in and maybe I'll get around to reading this interesting-sounding novel in January, maybe not. Anyway, lovely people, take care and happy reading! ♥️♥️ (edited) 8y
Lupita.Reads @shawnmooney cool beans! Completely understand! Yay to going rogue ❤️📚 8y
