Opposite of Butterfly Hunting: The Tragedy and the Glory of Growing Up; A Memoir
Opposite of Butterfly Hunting: The Tragedy and the Glory of Growing Up; A Memoir | Evanna Lynch
7 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
A searing memoir from actress and activist Evanna Lynch about the tragedy and the glory of growing up, mourning girlhood, and navigating the path between fears and dreams. Evanna Lynch has long been viewed as a role model for people recovering from anorexia, as the story of her casting as Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter films grew to almost mythic proportions--a tale of how she faced disordered eating as a young girl, found solace in a beloved book series, and later landed the part of her favorite character. But that is not the whole story. Even after recovery, there remains a conflict at the core of her being: a bitter struggle between the familiar, anesthetizing pursuit of perfection and the desire to fully and fearlessly embrace her creative side, uncertain as it may be. Revealing a startlingly accomplished voice, Lynch delves into the heart of her relationship with her body. As she takes the reader through a personal journey of leaving behind the safety of girlhood, she explores the pivotal choices that ultimately led her down the path of creativity and toward acceptance of the wild, sensual, and unpredictable reality of womanhood. Honest, electrifying, and inspiring, this is a story of the battle between self-destruction and creation, of giving up the preoccupation with perfection in favor of our uncharted dreams--and how the simple choice to create is the most liberating action a person can do.

This took way longer to read than it should have. I was disappointed in how whiny and irritating I found the author who played a much adored character in the movie adaptation of one of my favorite book series 🫤

I'm only 50 pages in and I am in love. So well written and such a poignant story about Evanna's struggle with disordered eating. She warns readers that it may be triggering for some. Beautifully written memoir!

This is an honest, jovial, bittersweet account of battling disordered eating as a child (and into adulthood). The balance between self discovery, self hatred, and self love is a considerable and constant struggle that Evanna Lynch (aka our beloved Luna Lovegood) guides the reader through with responsible transparency and grace.

An aggressive protest against womanhood and her relationship with her body. Evanna was so honest about her self-hate, toxic thoughts and her journey to self acceptance. At times I didn‘t feel like I was reading a memoir because I was so absorbed in this story about a girl and was rooting for her to find herself. My heart broke for her at times. This book was honest, mean, poignant and very often funny.⬇️

reading_rainbow Evanna Lynch is an intelligent and sensitive woman and I found this book to be brave in the way that she didn‘t soften her inner ugliness or self deprecation in an attempt to show herself in a better light. I definitely recommend this book, it made me laugh, cry and want to share🦋 3y
