Has a killer lain dormant for years only to strike again on New Years Eve? LAPD Detective Rene Ballard and Harry Bosch team up to find justice for an innocent victim in the new thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly There's chaos in Hollywood on New Year's Eve. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD Detective Rene Ballard seeks shelter at the end of the countdown to wait out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. As reports start to roll in of shattered windshields and other damage, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party. It doesn't take long for Ballard to determine that the deadly bullet could not have fallen from the sky. Ballards investigation leads her to look into another unsolved murdera case at one time worked by Detective Harry Bosch. Ballard and Bosch team up once again to find out where the old and new cases intersect. All the while they must look over their shoulders. The killer who has stayed undetected for so long knows they are coming after him.

#serieslove2024 It may sound odd that on a bad health day ( nothing too serious) that one finds “ comfort “in a series with murders , rapes , gangs & etc. Yet Ballard is a great cop & her work with retired Harry Bosch is always interesting. Even the bad cops get their due now & then. It‘s hard to believe I‘m nearly up to date on the Bosch series. The reality of Covid was handled well in this book without overwhelming the story.Kudos to Connelly!

Ruthiella I find mystery novels very comforting-particularly known series. It‘s the familiarity combined with the fact that the mystery is (usually) resolved that makes them so soothing. 8mo

This series is starting to feel a little insubstantial. Not light, at least not in content, but it feels too intentionally and superficially tied to reality, like a checklist (LA traffic, homelessness, pandemic, insurrection: check). That said, I'm still enjoying it quite a bit. The stories and interactions between characters are engaging, and it's a welcome break to put Connelly's books in my headphones after people talking to me all day.

One of my most reliable authors, Connelly always manages to organically inject current social commentary into his stories without it feeling preachy. Ballard and Bosch are such a fantastic team and I will be sad when Harry hangs it up for good.

I‘m probably not going to go out and walk (or really do much of anything) today, so here‘s yesterday‘s walk. Still 3 hours left in this book. I‘m a little frustrated with it in one aspect (spoiler in comment), but otherwise I‘m liking it. #audiowalk

KathyWheeler In a earlier book, Renee was sexually assaulted. In this book, she‘s assaulted in a manner that reminds you of rape. Connolly doesn‘t do this to Bosch or Haller. Why does he do it to Renee? 3y

I‘m so glad I decided to get my walk in early today — now it‘s raining. The Dark Hours is my new walking book, and so far, I like it. I‘m not a huge Ballard fan, but I‘m liking her better in this book. I still hate that macho “I‘ve got to run myself into the ground and work extra hours even if I don‘t get paid” attitude. How does not taking care of yourself benefit the people you‘re trying to help? It doesn‘t. #audiowalk

KathyWheeler @Kimzey I like that museum. They had a fabulous children‘s exhibit a few years ago that I took my granddaughter to — she loved it. The snake just snake there and did nothing. 3y
KathyWheeler @CBee Yes. 😊 This grey cat is relatively new at the botanical gardens. There were some orange and white ones, but I haven‘t seen them in awhile. 3y

I just love everything Michael Connelly does, so obviously I loved this hotly anticipated addition to the Ballard/Bosch mashup. This one takes place in covid times, amidst a lot of tension between communities and the police. Ballard struggles with finding a balance on how to be a great cop in a department that often has other priorities. Very timely and Connelly absolutely nailed it!

tokorowilliamwallace There's a lot of Michael Connelly donated by someone at my favorite local resale charity shop but I haven't been too interested in this author yet. Do his books and series generally touch on the themes you mention here, or in which one is most present and impactful in its meditations upon such discrepancies? 3y
swishandflick @tokorowilliamwallace He does touch on these themes throughout the Bosch series, but the books are not solely focused on them if that makes sense. The series is long running, so he'll often reference other big moments in LA history (the Rodney King riots for example) that have very timely insights. But the cases that he's working run a wide spectrum. I love all of his books though, so if you like crime fiction I'd def recommend! 3y

This one was the best in the Renee Ballard series so far. The audio was great, and I hope Ballard and Bosch continue to work together in future books.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ballard will always be Olivia Benson to me… 😂 Connelly nails what it‘s like during the pandemic- masks, those who don‘t wear them and working in the public - being a cop in 2021. I related as a teacher to all of it including the career fatigue all mixed in with an edge-of-the-seat mystery (2 actually!)… one of Connellys best. Full review ScrappyMags.com

I enjoyed this one. Love the balance of Ballard and Bosch.
I‘m sort of anticipating a Ballard future with maybe Bosch‘s daughter making an appearance. That‘s not a spoiler but my thoughts!

EvieBee Oooh! Hadn‘t thought of that, but I can see it. 3y
BarbaraBB Great review although a Ballard future sounds horrific 😨 3y
TrishB @EvieBee I think it will be a good way for Bosch to bow out. 3y
TrishB @BarbaraBB definitely not that Ballard 😁 3y

In this tightly plotted police procedural set during the pandemic, night shift detective Renee Ballard must balance the demands of a New Year's Eve shooting investigation with the search for two serial rapists. Ballard is a worthy successor to the legendary Harry Bosch; she cares more about solving the case and seeking justice for the victim than she does about sleep, her career, PR fallout for the LAPD, or the consequences of insubordination.

TrishB Just half way through now 👍🏻 3y

This is the best Renee Ballard book thus far. It was so good! The cases in this installment were pretty gritty and pulse pounding. I don‘t know how I‘m going to sleep now.

The best thing about it was the time Connelly took to interject social commentary in between all of the action. It wasn‘t preachy or haphazard. Everything from Rona, the vaccine to George Floyd and the attack on the Capitol. Can‘t wait for the next one!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TrishB I‘ll be getting to this soon! 3y

🎧 I didn‘t want to like this audiobook. I want a BOSCH book!!! Not a Rene Ballard story!!

So it‘s two stories/cases in one.

A gang member turned respectable business owner is murdered.

Tag team serial rapists are on the loose.

I loved it! See above for possible TW! This isn‘t the 1st Bosch book so if you‘ve read others, you know what you‘re in for! Took off 1/2⭐️ cuz she‘s no Bosch! Titus Welliver had brief cameos. BOSCH FAN!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
