Man with a Load of Mischief
Man with a Load of Mischief | Martha Grimes
At the Man with a Load of Mischief, they found the dead body stuck in a keg of beer. At the Jack and Hammer, another body was stuck out on the beam of the pub s sign, replacing the mechanical man who kept the time. Two pubs. Two murders. One Scotland Yard inspector called in to help. Detective Chief Inspector Richard Jury arrives in Long Piddleton and finds everyone in the postcard village looking outside of town for the killer. Except for one Melrose Plant. A keen observer of human nature, he points Jury in the right direction: into the darkest parts of his neighbors hearts "

A favorite series I want to revisit and get further into. I adore Jury who is funny and upbeat and smart. Plant's not bad either!

The last few days I haven‘t been excited by any of the things in my TBR pile, so I turned to a “comfort author” - Martha Grimes. I pulled her very first book in the Richard Jury series off my bookshelf and settled in to get reacquainted with Jury, Melrose Plant, Agatha, Marshall, and Vivian. Let me tell you, the dialog in this book hasn‘t aged well, but it‘s been fun to revisit the start of the Jury/Plant stories.

This is a big 👍! An enjoyable mystery with an engaging main character and exceptionally witty dialogue. It‘s my first Martha Grimes, and of course the first of the Richard Jury mysteries. The first book was published in 1981 and the most recent in 2019, so it will be fun to see the series evolve.

My first book down for #DashingDecember! I‘m aiming for five books and at least one bingo.

Sunrise this morning . . .

#20Series20Days Day 15

My #Top20Series list would not be complete without Richard Jury. This was one of the first mystery series I ever got hooked on (waaaaay back in the 80s) and I read each book as soon as it came out. I haven‘t kept up as much lately but that‘s on me and not the books. Of course younger me loved the names of the pubs but I also just liked the characters and the stories. It might be time for a reread...

@Andrew65

Andrew65 Looks good. 4y
AmyG I love Martha Grimes. So yes to this!. I remember reading these in the late 80‘s, early 90‘s....along with all of Ruth Rendell. I was on a British mystery jag. 🤣 (edited) 4y

This took a lot longer for me to read than it should have. I liked it. The plot was intelligent and the writing was very descriptive, but just the right amount to not be boring but to pull you completely into the story. Also: I like crime stories that go on for a bit after the case is solved. So yay new series!

Because I can‘t read only nonfiction, I‘m also going to start rereading the Richard Jury series starting with the 1985 Dell paperback edition ($3.50) of the first book which teenager me bought right around that time (book was originally published in 1981). Mind. Blown. That means this book has been on my bookshelves for almost 35 years and wow, when did that happen? No way so many years have passed!

Texreader I feel your pain. A couple years ago I finally got around to reading Lonesome Dove, which sat on my shelves since 1986, when I was 17-18. 5y

#winterwonderland #winterkills

Another December and I‘m posting about this book again. I tried not to but it‘s my favourite snowy mystery. ❄️❄️❄️

Each of this series titles is the name of the pub that the murder is either linked to or that everyone frequents over the book. Heaps of gentle murdery fun 😉

Cinfhen Perfect cozy for winter ❄️ 6y
JazzFeathers What a fantastic cover! And l love the idea for the series. I may be forced to hunt it down 😆 6y

Richard Jury, an inspector with Scotland Yard, and his friend Melrose Plant, a British aristocrat who assists him in his cases, are featured in this series. The titles of the novels are derived from clever names of actual pubs and bars, and in each book, both men are often seen frequenting the English pubs.

AmyG I went through a Martha Gimes stage, too. After my Ruth Rendell stage. 7y

#decdays #letitsnow

I love these Richard Jury mysteries, they‘re just so English! Each one is named after a pub and they‘re filled with manor houses and village greens and pantomimes and so on. And Richard Jury loves snow. In this first novel he leaves off detective work for a few minutes just so he can run through fresh snow with some kids ❄️❄️❄️

dsfisher Very much a Martha Grimes fan. Her characters are great fun. 7y
Centique @dsfisher aren‘t they just? 😊I‘m only 3 in so I‘ve got a lot of good left to read! 7y
Cinfhen Would this count as a #cozy?!?! 7y
Centique @Cinfhen yes definitely. Not as twee as some cozies , but also not scary or thrilling at all. 7y
Cathythoughts Lovely snowy scenes ✨✨✨ 7y

#tuneintonovember #forreasonsunknown

These guys deal in things that happen #forreasonsunknown Watching them figure it out is fun. You know Sherlock, Watson & Poirot - the other two are Peter Grant and Richard Jury from Martha Grimes great, slightly cosy, Scotland Yard series. In looking for an image of him I found that there‘s been an adaptation for German TV. 👍👍

Plenty of great female detectives too - sorry I missed them this time!

DGRachel Richard Armitage! 😍😍😍 7y
TricksyTails 😍😍 7y
Centique @DGRachel @TricksyTails oh I see what‘s happened! Somebody‘s made a Richard Jury shot from Armitage in Spooks. I was thinking it was from the German tv show but unfortunately no! Just wishful thinking.... 7y

I have a slight ocd to read my murder mystery book series in order but I can't binge read them. I intersperse them among my other reads. #bingereads #autumnreads @Tiffy_Reads @JoeStalksBeck

TrishB Same 👍 can never just read the same series in a row! But have to read in order. 7y
Reecaspieces I can't even read the same author back to back. I have to separate about three books between. I thought it was just me! 🤣 7y
batsy Me too! I'm having this issue with Jo Nesbø's books because I want to watch The Snowman when it comes out, but haven't read the previous books and need to, but can't binge read to catch up 😁 7y

DGRachel Until recently, I was the same way - must read in order, can't read back to back. I did a little binge reading the last two months, but I can't make a habit of it. 7y
eanderson I do something similar! I've only ever read a few in a series close together. :) 7y
writerlibrarian Much of the same. I read in order. I can binge read but not often. My last binge was 3 books of Alexandra Marinina last month. I have series I've been reading in order for years now. I finally ended Grimes a few years ago. I didn't read the last one because the reviews were so bad and i wanted to end it on a good note. (edited) 7y

The first Richard Jury novel is an absorbing murder mystery. I liked the characters of Jury and Plant and enjoyed the setting as much as the resolution of the various murders. I was engaged enough to order the next two books in the series!

Heard this book mentioned on #getbooked last week.

It's so delightful. I guess it's what you call a cozy mystery. Quaint English village, a cast of eccentric characters and a murder to be solved. In the pub no less! In this case the Detective isn't the hardened jaded grump - but a real sweetheart of a guy. I so enjoyed getting to know him & the village ambience just curls your toes with pleasure - will definitely read the series.

kspenmoll I have always enjoyed her mysteries- have not read this one ( or if I did, long ago so I can reread!) 8y
