After Francesco
After Francesco | Brian Malloy
10 posts | 6 read | 10 to read
From acclaimed author Brian Malloy comes a stunning novel of love, friendship, and surviving the deepest loss, set in New York City and Minneapolis in 1988, at the peak of the AIDS crisis. Two years after his partner, Francesco, died, twenty-eight-year-old Kevin Doyle is dusting off his one good suit jacket for yet another funeral, yet another loss in their close-knit group. They had all been young, beautiful, and living the best days of their lives, though they didnt know it. That was before New York City began to feel like a war zone, its horrors somehow invisible, and ignored by the rest of the world. Some people might insist that Francesco is in a better place now, but Kevin definitely isnt. He spends his days in a mind-numbing job and his evenings drunk in Francescos old apartment, surrounded by memories. Francesco made everything look easy, and without him, Kevin struggles to keep going. And then one night, he stops trying. When Kevin awakens in a hospital, he knows its time to move back home to Minnesota and figure out how to start living againwithout Francesco. With the help of a surviving partners support group and old and new friends, Kevin slowly starts to do just that. But an unthinkable family betrayal, and the news that his best friend is fighting for his life in New York, will force a reckoning and a defining choice. Drawing on his experience as part of the AIDS generation, Brian Malloy brings authenticity, insight, sensitivity, and humor to a story that is distinct yet universal in its powerful exploration of heartbreak and recovery, and the ways in which love can defy grief.

A late book report: I loved all 4 of my finished books. EJ, After Francesco (Booked22) and Memorial Drive were all 5 🌟 reads and The Heiress was 4🌟 I‘m behind on my buddy reads and The Sea was boring although to be fair I bailed fairly early.

So far, Gutsy Women, is ok. I think I‘m going to try Horse again on audio and am starting The Marriage Portrait in print.

Cinfhen I loved the EJ memoir and Memorial Drive - I did both on audio but then went ahead and bought the book ( ME) because the cover was fab and I needed to see the pics! I also LOVED 2y
Cinfhen We definitely have similar reading tastes so now I need to check out 2y

This quote is sticking with me. Perhaps also a potential for a coming out book for those who like me have left their #booked22 to be heavily backloaded!

My #booked22 choice for about the AIDS epidemic. This is first and foremost a story of grief. Kevin is at just 28 dealing with the painful death of his partner. The grief is palatable throughout - not just for Frankie bit for the life they haven‘t had. Sometimes darkly funny, sometimes shouting with barely retrained rage this book carried me along

Thank you to @TheBookHippie for bringing this to my attention on offer on kindle this week.
A story of gay men survivors/non survivors from AIDS in NYC in the 80s and their friends, families and political battles. Sad, but also full of dark humour, love, hope and support.

TheBookHippie 🤍🤍🤍 I loved it. 3y
Reggie I stacked it but I don‘t know. 3y

The AIDS crisis of the 80s seems to be gaining momentum in fiction. It‘s hard to read about but infinitely harder to have lived it as this heartbreaking read is showing so powerfully.

AmyG I read this. Won it from goodreads. While very heartbreaking, I actually enjoyed it. 4y
