This novo examines race, justice, forgiveness, and family in a small North Carolina town in 1984. It follows Sheriff Winston Barnes over a four day period as he investigates a murder and a plane crash that will reveal the tensions in his community. Told from the POVs of Barnes, his daughter Colleen, and Jay, the brother-in-law of the victim. It is a captivating (but slow moving) novel that offers a nuanced look at the South and its sordid history.

Obviously the cover of this book is gorgeous. The novel though was just okay. I thought that it really slogged along. I love strong character development. And I really liked the characters in the novel & I felt like I got to know them really well. It just didn't feel like much was happening. The twist on the last two pages was so incredible & I wish that more of the novel had this urgency. ⭐⭐⭐

Up next on audio. I‘ve heard good things about Wiley Cash...looking forward to my first book by him! 🎧

This book is Wiley Cash at his best! So incredibly good, even with an ending that hit me like a mack truck. 4.5⭐️

The characters were so well written, there was not a main or supporting character that I did not sympathize with. With lush storytelling thee is so much to draw from. My one fault with this book is the ending, I absolutely hated it, but I am sure that is what Cash wanted us to feel.

My last read of October, which I finished late last night. I love Wiley Cash and this one didn‘t disappoint. I especially appreciate all the details of its setting in Oak Island, North Carolina, a place I know well. The ending really got to me. No spoilers, but I saw where it was going in the final chapter and I think my heart rate went up.

At the Bookmarks Winston Salem book festival. Very safe as all the indoor venues require proof of vaccinations with social distancing and double masking. First venue was with Wiley Cash, Charlie Lovett and Anne Bogel.

How I plan to spend my rainy Saturday. Chloe, coffee…wine later and a book!!!

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗱 made me a devoted fan of 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗵 so I was very excited to get a copy of his new book, 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗚𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲. I'm enjoying it on the lanai, looking up now & then to watch a boat sail by & gaze over at the neighboring islands of Lanai & Moloka'i.

Cash, a thoughtful, articulate writer, immediately drew me into his characters' lives . . . again.⁣

I‘m really excited for this to come out later this year. Wiley Cash is a North Carolina author, and he‘s one of my favorites. I was always going to read whatever he published but I saw him do a virtual talk about this book several months ago that made me want to read it even more. He shared the cover this week.
