Karolina and the Torn Curtain
Karolina and the Torn Curtain | Maryla Szymiczkowa
12 posts | 3 read | 12 to read
Cracow, 1895. Zofia and her maid Francizka have their hands full organizing Easter festivities, especially with the household short one servant--where has the capable Karolcia disappeared to? Shortly after, Zofia hears that the body of a young woman, violated and stabbed, has washed up on a bank of the River Vistula. Domestic work can wait--Zofia must go investigate. Shockingly, the body turns out to be none other than Karolcia... Working with the police, Zofia goes on the hunt, uncovering a prostitution ring, and implicating gangsters and politicians alike as she unravels an unexpectedly twisted tale of love and deceit. "Written with abundant wit and flair,"** Cracow's finest, and most iconoclastic, amateur sleuth returns in a highly politicized feminist murder mystery. **Kirkus Reviews

I‘m hoping for those summer reading vibes

#aprilwrapup
A good month - I‘ve learnt so much, from French poisoning techniques to the politics of health care and Eastern European history. I‘ve been out to sea, and tagged along with a Victorian sleuth. I‘ve been disturbed by a vision of the near future and questioned the validity of our personal ‘truths‘. It‘s been an enlightening month!

MayJasper Quite an adventure wow👍 4y
Cathythoughts You‘ve had a good time ! I have my eye on The Lamplighters 👍🏻❤️ 4y

Pickpick

I love Sofia- she's smart, feisty, cutting & deeply concerned with her social status! It has a strong historical context but brings to it a modern sensibility as well. At times supporting characters have longish discussions that give context, history and social norms that can slow the narrative down little at times. That doesn't distract from a mature mystery that has a strong feminist voice.

This was always heading towards fragility, no? Though it lasted for as long as it did!
