Night Hawks | Elly Griffiths
18 posts | 19 read | 5 to read
There's nothing Ruth Galloway hates more than amateur archaeologists, but when a group of them stumble upon Bronze Age artifacts alongside a dead body, she finds herself thrust into their midst--and into the crosshairs of a string of murders circling ever closer. Ruth is back as head of archaeology at the University of North Norfolk when a group of local metal detectorists--the so-called Night Hawks--uncovers Bronze Age artifacts on the beach, alongside a recently deceased body, just washed ashore. Not long after, the same detectorists uncover a murder-suicide--a scientist and his wife found at their farmhouse, long thought to be haunted by the Black Shuck, a humongous black dog, a harbinger of death. The further DCI Nelson probes into both cases, the more intertwined they become, and the closer they circle to David Brown, the new lecturer Ruth has recently hired, who seems always to turn up wherever Ruth goes.

Another excellent book in the Ruth Galloway Series. Ruth and Nelson are caught up in an investigation following a body turning up in the water at the remote Blakeney Point. Then we have a scientist researcher and his wife turn up dead, looking as if it was a murder-suicide. A complex Murder investigation which keeps you guessing to the very end. A good few developments at the end of the book which will no doubt feed into the next book.

Ruth is back in Norfolk and is now head of the Archaeology Department as Phil has retired. She has hired David Brown as her new lecturer to take her place. A recently dead body is discovered on the beach along with Bronze Age artifacts by The Night Hawks who are detectorists. A murder/suicide happens next at the farmhouse of the detectorists. Nelson begins to not trust David Brown.

EadieB Is he jealous of David's attention to Ruth? I was glad to see Ruth and Kate return to Norfolk. Lots of changes in Nelson's police department too. I can't wait to read the next book in the series as this book left off as Nelson seems ready to make a decision about his and Ruth's relationship. I highly recommend this series as it is character driven and so interesting if you love a bit of history mixed with your mystery. 12mo

A group of metal detectorists exploring a beach find a washed up dead body as well as what may be a Bronze Age hoard. Nelson and Ruth swing into action.

I mainly read these for the combo of mystery and archaeology and am not so keen on the soap opera elements, so could have done without Maureen's cryptic advice to Nelson as a cliffhanger. The next one is set during lockdown, which I'd've thought would provide enough drama without histrionics.

Recovering from Covid and I‘ve just been able to read again.
This one written during lockdown. I‘m loving watching the characters develop. I think I have two more to read and I‘ll be caught up. The mystery in this one was better. But then I‘m not reading for that. I just love the people and learning about Norfolk and bits of archeology.

TheSpineView Love this series! 1y
Centique I hope youre feeling a bit better 💕 It really floors you. Took me ages to come right so i really recommend not pushing yourself as you recover, and getting plenty of rest. So glad you can read again though! ☺️ 1y
Jeg @Centique thanks for that advice. Much needed today. I had a great day yesterday and felt almost back to normal. Today I‘m sitting here feeling like I can‘t do anything. My partner was able to take antiviral and she has bounced back really well. 1y
CarolynM Sorry to hear you‘ve been ill. Hope you‘re feeling 100% again soon 💕 1y

Once again, Ruth is called to the scene of a crime, and discovers another ancient skeleton, this one surrounded by relics discovered by a metal detectorist group. She also clashes with an archaeologist that, as head of department, she has hired to take her old position. Norfolk legends, mysterious deaths, creepy old house, devil dog, Nelson in danger, and an ending that has me craving the next book in the series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is installment 13 in the Ruth Galloway series. The best part of the series is the lives of the characters and the ongoing character development continues to impress me. I love how the author uses local lore in the plot development. Looking forward to the next book. 4⭐

This is #13 in this series and, yet again, Elly Griffiths does not disappoint. The mystery was engaging as is always the case with Ruth Galloway and company. The fact that I figured out who the killer was way before the end wasn‘t even disappointing because it‘s the relationships between the recurring characters that makes this series compelling and a must read every time. Looking forward to #14, especially after reading the last page! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reading stats for March. Ended with twelve books read this month. Not too bad given the reading slump in the middle but seems to have passed now. Falling behind a little on my goodreads goal but there's still time.

This is my favorite mystery series, which I always order from the UK because I can‘t wait for the US release. I enjoyed this new one too. The mystery was typical of the series but I didn‘t guess the culprit at all. The personal lives of the recurring characters still keep me interested. I do wonder if Griffiths is starting to wind it down. I‘ll keep reading until it‘s done!

Lynnsoprano I don‘t want this series to ever end! 4y
MallenNC @Lynnsoprano I don‘t want it to either! I really love the setting, the characters, and their dynamics. 4y

Living in Norfolk I love this series recognising the locations and legends. I'm a huge fan so couldn't wait for this and I was not disappointed. Its a really good read and the stories never get old. I figured out some of the mystery but not all. Ruth is still likeable and the triangle between her Nelson and Michelle is interesting and I'm still not sure which way it will go or which way I want it to go. Book 3 of #MarvellousMarch 5*
