Forgot to review this. It's not a five-star read and especially towards the end I didn't always enjoy the writing as much. I don't know whether the whole ambition theme succeeded in the end. But overall, it was an enjoyable read that kept me reading. ⭐⭐⭐ and a half

I'm not the biggest fan of magicky stuff but I'm glad I picked this up! Hell, when is the subtext of every single Litsy post not going to be "I need something to engage, comfort and distract me during a horrible emotional time"? I really appreciate authors that can pull off a non-realistic premise, and her writing is good, with just a few tiny wobbles here and there.

This book is beautifully written and does a great job exploring the themes of desire, ambition, addiction, failure, and the fear of running out of time. The characters are complex and realistic, and I found myself frequently wanting to shake the main character and tell him to “get it together!”

4/5 ⭐ I did not like the protagonist for most of the book, found him petulant and insufferable. But the underlying causes, the unreasonable community and familial expectations put on immigrant kids along with the general hardship of adolescence, explain many of his behaviors and poor decisions. An eye opening and well-crafted story.

This was an upcoming book club pick. Loved the first half. But the second half honestly felt like a slog, and was disappointing. Did anyone else feel the same way?

Oh my, this was so wonderful. Set amongst Indian American families living in the suburbs of Georgia. I'll admit that the first half was a bit slow while the main character is an aimless teenager trying to figure out how to be ambitious and driven like so many of his striving friends. His life gets a lot more complicated, alchemy is involved, a horrible tragedy that might have been his fault, and then a jump to adult life where things really fly

Ready for some magical realism, some alchemy, some coming of age, and some fun! All the way through, right? Nothing terrible coming my way, right?

The is a genre mash-up story. Its MC is second generation Indian American. He struggles to develop the focus and drive of the 1st-Gen. There‘s also some history around the drive to find gold in the US—from Georgia to CA. And there‘s a big gulp of magical realism around the idea of alchemy—ingesting gold to create a better life. The heart of it is about family and community, though.

This magical realism story is about Neal, and Anita, the girl across the street. When Neal stumbles upon an old alchemy brew Anita and her mom create using gold, things go awry. A decade later, Neal and Anita‘s paths cross once again on the other side of the country and plans for a gold heist begin to form. The want for a longer life and cheating time, folklore, teen pressure, and Indian/Asian cultures make this a unique read.

This was a fantastic audio! Loved the story - a satirical look at the quest (and cost) of pursuing the American Dream by the child/community of children of Indian immigrants. I forgot how much I enjoy a splash of magical realism in my reading.

I absolutely loved this novel that speaks to the Indian-American experience with a bit of magical realism thrown in. The #audiobook was FABULOUS! #ARC #Edelweiss

I received my second #Indiespensable box (including local Dutch cookies having travelled half the world 😉) and I am loving it.

How sad that this will be my last box as well since Powell‘s won‘t be sending boxes to the EU any longer due to some stupid European regulation.

I am sad about that, I had been looking forward to collecting these wonderful editions 😢

Finally picking this up again after my #libraryhold became available. Honestly, I‘m loving the audiobook narrator but the book‘s narrator not so much. Maybe I‘m too old for teenage angst and young adult ennui. I keep rolling my eyes and wanting him to just get on with life.

This magical realism take on the Indian-American experience is a win!

In high school, Neil has a crush on Anita and finds out she and her mother are brewing a special lemonade with gold that brings them success. Neil starts drinking it too, and then takes it too far with tragic consequences. Years later Neil and Anita reconnect and go on a mission to make the lemonade again. Their careers are floundering, but perhaps Neil is too greedy again? 🤔

Too bad I can't needlepoint and read at the same time.

Missions accomplished. We bought our house in Vegas and now we are waiting on paperwork. So I guess we are trapped at the pool today with laptops and phones. And books. Of course.

Does anyone know this book or author? It‘s Powell‘s next #Indiespensable instalment and I‘d like to know more about it.

Meh, I hope the adaptation by Mindy Kaling is better than the book!
