This book didn‘t really live up to my expectations at first but drastically improved as time went on and the story developed. I ended up really liking the characters and particularly the way they interacted with each other through dialogue. I didn‘t really like the main character at first but she grew on me and I think that this was overall a great story, with interesting twists that made me gasp and scene that made me laugh.

“Doing necromancy in the attic,” Delly told her.

“I can,” Delly said. The ladies both turned to look at her. She shrugged. “Love is complicated.”

This, then, was something interesting, and Delly was a long-standing enthusiast of being interested.

[It] was like love, she figured: all good enough fun, but you‘d better not let yourself get too used to it or it‘d take you apart as sure as knives.

A decent story, but I wasn‘t blown away. I had to kind of trudge through the old-time British slang, which slowed me down a bit….

This was a recommendation from myTBR.co and I‘m so glad!

Rollicking fun fantasy crime investigation with sassy ladies. Dellaria was raised by her mam and has always struggled to afford rent, though to be fair that sometimes is because she‘s spent her money at a bar. She takes a job using her magic to protect a “lady of worth” and meets a group of wizarding women who band together when things go strange.

I loved this! I hope there‘s a sequel.

I read this for the #SwordandLaser Podcast

The language took a bit to get used to, but once I got into the flow of the book it was quite charming & enjoyable. A group of young women take on a job to protect a lady whilst she's in seclusion until her wedding day. Hijinks ensue & the ladies have to figure out who is behind the attacks.

The MC is a a fire witch and a disreputable lady with previous encounters with the law.

A solid 3 1/2 star read.

I didn‘t really understand the construct of this world, so that may have lessened my delight in this novel.

I'm pretty sure this is the first time Raith has ever slept on my lap! ❤️ He's very much a prude and I'm still not able to pet him without getting some serious side eye. 😆 I'm just glad he's finally joined in the #readathon tradition of laying on me while I read. His brother Dresden has been doing it for years.

“She always says that if you keep children going until they‘re exhausted, feed them, and put them in bed, then it doesn‘t leave them with any time to stick themselves with knives or fall down wells. So now that I‘m all grown up I march myself around for hours and I haven‘t fallen down any wells yet.” Proud to say I‘ve also avoided falling in any wells! #adulting

Clare-Dragonfly It‘s hard to keep children going until they‘re exhausted when you have less energy than they do 😅 3y
SincerelyWinona @Clare-Dragonfly oh I bet! I wasn‘t considering this advice for actually small children, as much as for adult children such as myself lmao! 3y

This book was just okay for me. I wasn‘t hooked or had a need to finish the book as soon as I picked it up. I only finished it because I downloaded it on Hoopla and I can‘t waste my 5 holds!

Delly is kind of a crook, but she‘s also looking out for her mom and trying to get her off drugs. She takes a job protecting a lady before her wedding. It‘s a fantasy/historical fiction/queer story and had a romance.

#NutsinMay Book 2 finished

It was a slow month for me reading wise, partly because I have divided my focus and currently am at least halfway through three separate books. Hopefully I will be able to catch up next month.

The Ruthless Lady‘s Guide to Wizardry was the stand out read this month. I loved the world. It was fun, funny, and had a cute lesbian romance as a central subplot. Also magic!

This has been a good week for #bookmail! I bought a one time box from Unplugged Book Box because their January Adult Fiction sounded interesting and I am not disappointed. The book sounds so good and I am so excited for the A Darker Shade of Magic wallet. I won't subscribe every month but will definitely keep an eye on the themes of the boxes to buy again. #unpluggedbookbox #bookbox #unplugged

Started my year off with this ARC, which publishes in a week! The things about it that were good were very good - the magic system and setting of a pseudo-Victorian London city, the cast of characters, and the f/f romance between con artist Dellaria and titled half-troll fellow bodyguard Winn - but the pacing was tough. After an exciting first chunk of the book the plot drags as the ladies scheme and plan to find the villain.
