Next Everest: Surviving the Mountain's Deadliest Day and Finding the Resilience to Climb Again
Next Everest: Surviving the Mountain's Deadliest Day and Finding the Resilience to Climb Again | Jim Davidson
3 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
A dramatic account of the deadly avalanche on Everest--and a return to reach the summit. On April 25, 2015, Jim Davidson was climbing Mount Everest when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake released avalanches all around him and his team, destroying their only escape route and trapping them at nearly 20,000 feet. It was the largest earthquake in Nepal in eighty-one years and killed nearly 8,900 people. That day also became the deadliest in the history of Everest, with eighteen people losing their lives on the mountain. After spending two unsettling days stranded on Everest, Davidson's team was rescued by helicopter. The experience left him shaken, and despite his thirty-three years of climbing and serving as an expedition leader, he wasn't sure that he would ever go back. But in the face of risk and uncertainty, he returned in 2017 and finally achieved his dream of reaching the summit. Suspenseful and engrossing, The Next Everest portrays the experience of living through the biggest disaster to ever hit the mountain. Davidson's background in geology and environmental science makes him uniquely qualified to explain why the seismic threats lurking beneath Nepal are even greater today. But this story is not about "conquering" the world's highest peak. Instead, it reveals how embracing change, challenge, and uncertainty prepares anyone to face their "next Everest" in life.

BookNAround @BennettBookworm That‘s awesome to hear. It‘s taking all of my willpower not to crack it open immediately. But I do have to do some work so I‘m behaving (at least right now). 3y

This book started out scary during the 2015 earthquake that rocked Mt Everest and destroyed Base Camp. It was exciting to follow Jim‘s journey down from Camp One and through Nepal after the quake. He did a lot of fundraising and awareness after and decided to go back in 2017. I lost a bit of interest in his second journey, I think because I enjoyed The Third Pole ⬇️ so much better in that respect. But, it was good to see Jim face his fears.

Megabooks The top picture is the path of the avalanche that destroyed Base Camp. Then there‘s a picture of Jim on the mountain and the view from the summit in 2017. @Cinfhen I‘d recommend The Third Pole ⬇️ over this, but you‘d probably enjoy the #audiobook more with both. #Nepal #ReadingAsia2021 @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle 4y
Megabooks ⬆️ The Third Pole (also released in April) follows climbers in 2019 on the Tibetan side looking for proof (in a camera) that George Mallory and his party were the first to summit Everest in the 1920s. I found it to be the more exciting, comprehensive book overall, especially if you‘re a history buff, FWIW. 4y

In 2015, Jim Davidson was attempting to summit Mount Everest when a deadly earthquake hit Nepal. He tells the story of his experience with the terror of the quake, the sadness in the loss of life, and the disappointment in the loss of his dream. His writing draws you into the trip, its aftermath, and how his life was changed. It was a captivating look at the extreme nature of climbing mountains and the physical and mental fitness (con't)

CaitZ to attempt such a feat. A great book for any adventure lover. I received an ARC from St. Martin‘s Press and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
