The Perfect Nine
The Perfect Nine: The Epic of G?k?y? and M?mbi | Ngugi wa Thiong'o
8 posts | 5 read | 7 to read
A dazzling, genre-defying novel in verse from the author Delia Owens says tackles the absurdities, injustices, and corruption of a continent Ng?g? wa Thiongos novels and memoirs have received glowing praise from the likes of President Barack Obama, the New Yorker, the New York Times Book Review, The Guardian, and NPR; he has been a finalist for the Man International Booker Prize and is annually tipped to win the Nobel Prize for Literature; and his books have sold tens of thousands of copies around the world. In his first attempt at the epic form, Ng?g? tells the story of the founding of the G?k?y? people of Kenya, from a strongly feminist perspective. A verse narrative, blending folklore, mythology, adventure, and allegory, The Perfect Nine chronicles the efforts the G?k?y? founders make to find partners for their ten beautiful daughterscalled The Perfect Nine and the challenges they set for the 99 suitors who seek their hands in marriage. The epic has all the elements of adventure, with suspense, danger, humor, and sacrifice. Ng?g?s epic is a quest for the beautiful as an ideal of living, as the motive force behind migrations of African peoples. He notes, The epic came to me one night as a revelation of ideals of quest, courage, perseverance, unity, family; and the sense of the divine, in human struggles with nature and nurture.

The Perfect Nine and a bowl of githeri, a hearty red bean and white maize stew from #Kenya, which I will definitely make again.

I started Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's epic poem about the Gĩkũyũ people's origin story for #foodandlit #Kenya. Loving it so far, but then you can't go wrong with wa Thiong'o! When will he get his Nobel Prize for Literature?

PS: there is something geological about the book's illustrations...

#BookReport

This week is the perfect example of what happens when you forget that you are supposed to start several buddy reads and have books due at Libby. I‘m all over the place

I finished Evelyn Hugo and Gender Games. I continued listening to All Creatures and buddy reading Four Hundred Souls.

I‘ve started Ace, Great Circle and Sister, Outsider

And lastly because it was soon due back at Libby, I read the tagged book.

sarahbarnes I started Great Circle, too - will be interested to hear what you think of it! I love it so far. 3y
Cinfhen So many Littens are reading and loving this book ~ hope you love it too…especially since it‘s a #chunkster 🙀 3y

Pickpick

It‘s an interpretation of a myth written in the form of an epic poem about the first man and woman, their nine (ten) daughters, and the beginning of nine Kenyan clans. For me the biggest surprised was that the story has such a strong emphasis on feminism and disability, and I think that this is also the strongest message of this interpretation of the myth. It wasn‘t perfect, but very solid and enjoyable read. #InternationalBookerPrize2021

Simona @BookwormM Yes, it is very enjoyable read. I was searching for original story, if maybe it is somewhere on the web, but I couldn‘t find it ☹️ I‘m not familiar with Monkey ... another thing to look up 😘 4y
Simona @Cinfhen The story have some strong messages and lessons for today‘s crazy world! 4y
Cinfhen Do u think it‘ll make the shortlist?? I‘m gonna try to find a copy, just in case 💕 4y
Simona @Cinfhen I still have to read four books from longlist, so for now it‘s on my shortlist, but I think that this is not strong enough story for official shortlist. After reading nine books, I could say that jury selection is more interested in the form/narrative style side, than story itself. Library would be my advice😘 4y
Cinfhen Thanks xx advice heeded 😁 4y
