The Woman in the Mirror
The Woman in the Mirror: A Novel | Rebecca James
9 posts | 7 read | 16 to read
Rebecca James unveils a chilling modern gothic novel of a family consumed by the shadows and secrets of its past in The Woman in the Mirror. For more than two centuries, Winterbourne Hall has stood atop a bluff overseeing the English countryside of Cornwall and the sea beyond. In 1947, Londoner Alice Miller accepts a post as governess at Winterbourne, looking after Captain Jonathan de Greys twin children. Falling under the de Greys spell, Alice believes the family will heal her own past sorrows. But then the twins adoration becomes deceitful and taunting. Their father, ever distant, turns spiteful and cruel. The manor itself seems to lash out. Alice finds her surroundings subtly altered, her air slightly chilled. Something malicious resents her presence, something clouding her senses and threatening her very sanity. In present day New York, art gallery curator Rachel Wright has learned she is a descendant of the de Greys and heir to Winterbourne. Adopted as an infant, she never knew her birth parents or her lineage. At long last, Rachel will find answers to questions about her identity that have haunted her entire life. But what she finds in Cornwall is a devastating tragic legacy that has afflicted generations of de Greys. A legacy borne from greed and deceit, twisted by madness, and suffused with unrequited love and unequivocal rage.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5

I have not read a good authentic Gothic story in a long time. It starts in the late 1800's to present day spanning several generations of a family. In this castle-like estate on the English coastline lurks a dark sinister mystery, a spectral presence looming about casting it's shadow and eeriness. Very good. I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed it.

The Woman in the Mirror is an enjoyable gothic mystery with creative plot development and little hints of creepiness.

Since December is the last month of the year, it made sense to finally get around to The End of the Year Book Tag on BookTube. Check out my answers and let me know yours! https://youtu.be/31LoO1LWBPw

#yearinreview #readingplans #decemberreading #bookcommunity #bookworms #letstalkaboutbooks #bookchat

EadieB @Butterflysmore Any books to finish by years‘s end: I would like to finish the last book in The Dark Tower series as I have read all the others this year. I also started The Name of the Rose but put it aside as it was not the right time to read it. I‘ve had the 2nd book in a series by Peter James on my TBR for so long that I really should read that too. But I am involved in the #WinterGames and that will make these reads to wait until 2020. 5y
EadieB @Butterflyamore Any autumnal books to transition to December: Not really but I do have ARC‘s to catch up with. Any new releases: I am on hold at the library for Cruel Acts the last book in Maeve Kerrigan series by Jane Casey. Also waiting for This Tender Land by W. Krueger. The ARC‘s (NetGalley) that I need to read by year‘s end are: The Other Wife by C. McGowan, Hid From Your Eyes by Julia Spencer-Fleming and The Tenant by K. Engberg. 5y

EadieB @Butterflyamore I also have Physical ARC‘s to read B/4 2020: Empire of Lies by R. Khoury, The Sea of Lost Girls by C. Goodman and The Unwilling by John Hart. The best books I‘ve read this year have been the series by both Adrian McKinty (Sean Duffy) and by Jane Casey (Maeve Kerrigan). Ken Follett‘s stand-alone have all been winners to as read one a month of those. I have many 5 star books but these 3 authors are the best of the year for me. 5y
EadieB @Butterflyamore Plans for 2020 are to read 3 Nordic Noir authors series Jussi Adler-Olsen, Camilla Lackberg and Lars Kepler. Finish reading Follett. Starting Elizabeth George series. Finish Maeve Binchy‘s books and Cara Black‘s Aimee deLuc series. I‘m doing Mr Book‘s monthly read challenge too. Also Group Reads on LibraryThing that I am involved with. So it will be a busy year. I have lots of series started and need to finish those too. 5y
EadieB @Butterflyamore I will finish the year with a little over 200 books and my goal for 2020 will be at least 200 books too. 5y

If you enjoy the gothic genre and are looking for a bit of a ghost story, this one's for you! A few bits could have benefitted from a bit more development but still a good weekend read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Mehso-so

Rebecca James‘s gothic horror novel has some tense scenes and nicely nods at THE TURNING OF THE SCREW but while I enjoyed the 1947 storyline with Alice‘s increasingly fragile mental state, the 2018 love triangle was a little clumsy, the central curse storyline never really convinced me and there were too many unanswered questions about the twins while the twist ending didn‘t ring true given that Rachel knew what the curse was attached to.
