This is my second Adam Gopnik I‘ve posted about this week. As climate change brings the risk of a shrinking winter, this meditation illustrates its beauty through time, science, politics, art, poetry, song and story.

I thought today's prompt - Snowman - would be easy: snap a picture of Raymond Brigg's The Snowman, one of the best children's book there is. Done! Only I couldn't find the book anywhere in the house... So, instead, here is the page on snowmen in Adam Gopnik's non-fiction book about winter, with a Christmas card as an illustration.

I love the CBC Massey Lectures and this one was great. It was such a quiet and interesting read. Gopnik explores in five themes how our culture has depicted winter and how winter has impacted all aspects of our culture - literature, music, visual arts, sports, architecture and urban planning... I think it would appeal to my fellow Canadian Littens 😉

mllemay For those of you who read French, I've posted my favorite poem on winter with my review (notes courtesy of my mother when she was at university ?) - Soir d'hiver by Émile Nelligan 8y

mllemay @KVanRead I had that song in my head yesterday because we had the first snowstorm (and this morning when it took me 10 minutes to dig out the car lol). Love me some French-Canadian folklore ❄️🌬🌨 8y

From the essay on recuperative winter, or the history/evolution of the Christmas holiday. Seems especially pertinent this year...
