Earth Keeper
Earth Keeper: Reflections on the American Land | N. Scott Momaday
6 posts | 8 read | 7 to read
A beautifully written and poignant tribute to the Earth, from Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and poet N. Scott Momaday. One of the most distinguished voices in American letters, N. Scott Momaday has devoted much of his life to celebrating and preserving Native American culture, especially its oral tradition. A member of the Kiowa tribe who was born and grew up on Indian reservations throughout the Southwest, Momaday has an intimate connection to the land he knows well and loves deeply. In Earth Keeper: Reflections on an American Land, Momaday reflects on his native ground and its influence on his people. "When I think about my life and the lives of my ancestors, I am inevitably led to the conviction that I, and they, belong to the American land. This is a declaration of belonging. And it is an offering to the earth." he writes. Earth Keeper is a story of attachment, rooted in oral tradition. Momaday recalls stories of his childhood that have been passed down through generations, stories that reveal a profound and sacred connection to the American landscape and a reverence for the natural world. In this moving work, he offers an homage and a warning. Momaday reminds us that the Earth is a sacred place of wonder and beauty; a source of strength and healing that must be protected before it's too late. As he so eloquently yet simply reminds us, we must all be keepers of the Earth.

I‘m not quite sure what to say about this. I came across it on Libby one day when I was sifting through poetry options. A beautiful and odd little project, it‘s a hybrid of poetry, Native Mythology, essay, and even some autobiography. Written very simply in the vein of traditional Native myths, Momaday has created something truly unique.

R.I.P N. Scott Momaday. 🌄

AnnCrystal 👏😯😘🌍🌎🌏💝😢👍. (edited) 9mo
AnnCrystal I had to go search, I couldn't believe this 😢. His voice was soothing, his words like seeds...loved his story about when he was saved as a young boy (age ??), when he was mysteriously saved while trying to climb down a cliff (which he hadn't realized was dangerously steep). 🥺💝. 9mo
Blueberry @AnnCrystal I will look that one up. I'm not usually a poetry person but I felt understood him and were if similar minds. 9mo
Blueberry @AnnCrystal 'of' not 'if' 😀 9mo

Lines that make you consider how many nonliving things exist between yourself and the living earth really put things in perspective

I read this to fulfill Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge #20: Read a book of nature poems. It's probably the first book of nature poems I've read, and I quite enjoyed it :)

I loved this little gem of a book! Momaday embodies the spirit of the earth, poet and storyteller in a special way and I feel more connected to the world around me after reading his words. This book is a blessing to our world and I encourage you to give it a read! #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

These short stories were not as meaningful to me as I wish they were. Im probably not the target audience though. I absolutely loved his drawings. Just want to keep reading indigenous stories.
