All Thirteen: the Incredible Cave Rescue of the Thai Boys' Soccer Team
All Thirteen: the Incredible Cave Rescue of the Thai Boys' Soccer Team | Christina Soontornvat
9 posts | 8 read | 2 to read
A unique account of the amazing Thai cave rescue told in a heart-racing, you-are-there style that blends suspense, science, and cultural insight. On June 23, 2018, twelve young players of the Wild Boars soccer team and their coach enter a cave in northern Thailand seeking an afternoon's adventure. But when they turn to leave, rising floodwaters block their path out. The boys are trapped! Before long, news of the missing team spreads, launching a seventeen-day rescue operation involving thousands of rescuers from around the globe. As the world sits vigil, people begin to wonder: how long can a group of ordinary kids survive in complete darkness, with no food or clean water? Luckily, the Wild Boars are a very extraordinary "ordinary" group. Combining firsthand interviews of rescue workers with in-depth science and details of the region's culture and religion, author Christina Soontornvat--who was visiting family in Northern Thailand when the Wild Boars went missing--masterfully shows how both the complex engineering operation above ground and the mental struggles of the thirteen young people below proved critical in the life-or-death mission. Meticulously researched and generously illustrated with photographs, this page-turner includes an author's note describing her experience meeting the team, detailed source notes, and a bibliography to fully immerse readers in the most ambitious cave rescue in history.

Mehso-so

Some young boys on a soccer team in Thailand were stranded in a cave in 2018 while exploring with their coach. The country and people from across the world came together to save them. Obviously, the rescue was incredible and it‘s a wonderful true story, but the book is written in a way that made it drag even though it was short.

Texreader What a shame! I watched this story unfold with such dread and so happy they were rescued 4w
AvidReader25 @Texreader It‘s not a bad book! Just maybe for a YA audience and not well paced. 3w

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Loved this on audio! The harrowing story of the rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach from a cave in Thailand. Also learned quite a bit about Thai culture and cave diving and exploration. Highly recommend.

15 Jul-15 Aug 2021 (audiobook)
A story which fascinated (and terrified) the world turned into a short narrative non-fiction book. The girls and I enjoyed listening to this, although having two lockdowns in the past month, it took us a bit longer than expected as we mostly listen in the car. I expect it would have been even more gripping if we had been listening more regularly. Still, both were intrigued and very relieved when the boys survived.

Pickpick

Wow. I am so grateful to the Newbery committee for picking this as an Honor book this year, because I would never have picked it up otherwise. This is one of those stories where truth is more incredible than fiction. Everyone needs to know about this rescue! Read this book!

(I finally finished, @BucklingBookshelves !) #buddyread

Prairiegirl_reading I have very bad claustrophobia. There is no way I could read this!! Sounds interesting though!! 4y
BucklingBookshelves I agree with all of this! What an amazing true story. And I‘d NEVER have picked it up if not a Newbery. I think middle grade non/fiction is a genre I haven‘t given a fair chance. SO curious to see an example of the author‘s fiction since her A Wish in the Dark was also honored this year. 2 Newberys in one year for the same author is definitely a rarity! I‘ll have to look up if it‘s ever happened before. 🤔 4y
BucklingBookshelves P.S. I didn‘t find not too many quotable passages to really discuss along the way, but still felt this was VERY well written. 4y

smilingshelves @Prairiegirl_reading It was interesting, but maybe one you want to skip for now! 😊 4y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves It will be really interesting to see what her fiction is like. She's had a busy couple years of writing and publishing to make two Newberys happen in the same year! Do we want to do A Wish in the Dark next? 4y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves I think that‘s a great idea! I have it out from the library and should be able to renew. Maybe sometime after Easter? 4y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves I'll try to get my hands on a copy in the next couple weeks! 😊 4y

Pg 132 #buddyread

I could weep 😭 They finally have been found, yet we know the rescue is far from over. The offer of help from a 14-year old boy who is literally trapped & starving. 😭

smilingshelves What an amazing moment! And you weren't kidding when you said you were going to read fast! Glad I know I only have to make it to page 132 before they're found. 😃 Feel free to keep posting! It just might be a couple days before I reply. 4y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves highly unusual for me, but I seem to be a bit on a runaway train on this one! 😬 Even though I know the gist of the story, I‘m finding it both terrifying and riveting. Definitely a page-turner and so well-written. This wasn‘t on my radar at all, but it may end up being a bit of a sleeper hit! 4y

I don‘t always read the jacket copy or author bio before starting a book, but I‘m really glad I did this time! #buddyread

smilingshelves I always start with the author bio. 😄 I agree that it definitely paid off this time! 4y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves I‘m going to have to make it a new habit! And take this with a grain of salt because I‘m not the fastest reader, especially with little ones around... but I don‘t think I‘m going to be able pace this one out. I‘m going to want to get out of that cave and to the safe ending as fast as I can! 4y
smilingshelves Read as fast as you like! We know the ending, so we don't have to worry about spoiling anything. 😊 4y

My hold came in, @BucklingBookshelves ! I'm ready to start whenever you are! 😃

Mitch Your brave reading this - the thought of being inside that cave warren absolutely terrifies me! 4y
smilingshelves @Mitch I totally agree! I honestly didn't follow this news story while it was happening because I just couldn't think about those kids trapped in a cave. But this book is a Newbery Honor book this year, so I've got to read it. I think it'll help to know the happy ending in advance! 4y
Mitch @smilingshelves agreed! I found the whole thing so horrific to think about when it was being reported. 4y
BucklingBookshelves I was actually just trying decide what book I‘d pick up next, so I can start today if you want! 4y
BucklingBookshelves And totally agree this was so terrifying as it was happening. Agree it‘s good to read it now knowing they got out! 4y
