A stunning first graphic novel by a Cape/Comica/Observer graphic short story competition winner a tale of a skirmish in the ice-cream wars that is worthy of Alan Bennett In the small seaside town of Dobbiston, Howard sells ice creams from his van, just like his father before him. But when he notices a downturn in trade, he soon realises its cause: Tony Augustus, Howards half-brother, whose ice-cream empire is expanding all over the North-West... Flake, Matthew Dooleys debut graphic novel, tells of how this epic battle turns out, and how Howard helped by the Dobbiston Mountain Rescue team overcomes every obstacle and triumphs in the end.

I hugely enjoyed this whimsical graphic novel about rival ice-cream sellers. The first graphic novel to win the Wodehouse Humour prize, it's melancholic and suffused with a sense of...things slipping away but it ends on a lovely uplifting note of joy,a sense of community and friendship.

Pickpick

I bought this as it won a UK humour-writing prize.

It made me laugh, although initially the story (ice cream wars: no, not the Glaswegian kind) is pretty bleak, it definitely has a soft-centre.

(Sorrynotsorry)

TrishB Our ice cream man finally came back tonight 😁 first time since last October! 4y
charl08 @TrishB 👏 the one in Ormskik park has painted metre distancing on the pavement by where they park 🍦🍦🍦 4y
TrishB He had a complete plastic screen and just handed things through it. I like the small normalities returning. 4y
charl08 @TrishB Yes. I picked this up from my local Waterstones, first time in a shop other than essentials for months. Apart from the guy behind me in a q who seemed to think any distancing was optional, it felt like a nice return to shopping "normally". 4y
TrishB I‘m desperate to get to s Waterstones! Probably when I manage to get a hair app 😁 4y
