The Temporary Bride
The Temporary Bride: A Memoir of Food and Love in Iran | Jennifer Klinec
12 posts | 5 read | 29 to read
A relationship was a mathematical formula: the correct variables of age, beauty, morality and finances were entered and the output was a successful, peaceful marriage. It couldn't be, therefore, that their Iranian son could feel desire for someone six years his senior, someone who didn't come to him pure and untouched. I was an amusing visitor from another world and soon enough I should return to it, fading quietly into an anecdote ... In her thirties, Jennifer Klinec abandons a corporate job to launch a cooking school from her London flat. Raised in Canada to Hungarian-Croatian parents, she has already travelled to countries most people are fearful of, in search of ancient recipes. Her quest leads her to Iran where, hair discreetly covered and eyes modest, she is introduced to a local woman who will teach her the secrets of the Persian kitchen. Vahid, her son, is suspicious of the strange foreigner who turns up in his mother's kitchen; he is unused to seeing an independent woman. But a compelling attraction pulls them together and then pits them against harsh Iranian laws and customs. Getting under the skin of one of the most complex and fascinating nations on earth, The Temporary Bride is a soaring story of being loved, being fed, and the struggle to belong.

Finished on my flight.... light pick as my favorite parts were her talking about the food and not the relationship which took over the book.

EvieBee This is a favorite foodie book for me! 3y

Happy Thanksgiving.... airport style 😊😂

carlthecattt Was just thinking Chinese sounds like a great substitute for a Turkey dinner today. Safe travels! 3y
DrexEdit Yum! I'm not a fan of turkey. I always prefer having Chinese on Thanksgiving! ☺️ Safe travels! 3y
JenReadsAlot @carlthecattt @DrexEdit I'm not a huge fan of Thanksgiving food so I was okay with it!! And thank you both - arrived in San Antonio for the weekend! 3y

Finished this book for my virtual foodie book club & really enjoyed it. A memoir about a woman who travels to Iran to learn the traditions of cooking Persian food & falls in love. The food was the highlight of the story as is the Whole Roasted Cauliflower with Warm Harissa Hummus I paired with it. I don‘t think the pic does it justice but if your holidays include vegan & gluten free foods, this is an easy & delicious dish.😋Review/recipe link👇🏻

Thanks to @JenP for this memoir. It arrived today and its timing is perfect. I'm almost done with A History of Love. #CupidGoesPostal #ValentinesBookExchange

JenP Woo hoo! I know nothing about this book other than having read a strong Litsy review and thinking it might be perfect for #cupidgoespostal theme. I wish I could remember whose review I saw so I could tag them. I will be curious to see what you think. 8y

My top 4 non-fiction reads of 2016. I loved the Iranian travel and foodie theme of THE TEMPORARY BRIDE. So good! THE TIME IN BETWEEN was another amazing memoir about a young woman's battle with anorexia beginning in her preteens. Powerful! I also loved AN ABBREVIATED LIFE, which was so bizarre you'd think it was fiction. YOU'LL GROW OUT OF IT was a wonderful audiobook. Jessie made me laugh so hard! #nonfictionreads #topreadsof2016

LeahBergen Ooo! I have The Temporary Bride on my shelf. 8y

Chose to read this as part of the Read Harder Challenge 2016. I know it explicitly states that it's a memoir about food AND love but I just wanted to keep reading about all the delicious food and kept rushing the love chapters.

LeahBergen I have this one waiting for me on my shelf. I love a good food memoir! 8y
