Under the Net | Iris Murdoch
A comic novel about work and love, wealth and fame Jake Donaghue, garrulous artist, meets Hugo Bellfounder, silent philosopher. Jake, hack writer and sponger, now penniless flat-hunter, seeks out an old girlfriend, Anna Quentin, and her glamorous actress sister, Sadie. He resumes acquaintance with the formidable Hugo, whose philosophy he once presumptuously dared to interpret. These meetings involve Jake and his eccentric servant-companion, Finn, in a series of adventures that include the kidnapping of a film-star dog and a political riot on a film set of ancient Rome. Jake, fascinated, longs to learn Hugos secret. Perhaps Hugos secret is Hugo himself? Admonished, enlightened, Jake hopes at last to become a real writer.

Very exciting discoveries on my morning walk. The LFL I got them from has been renovated over our lockdown & now most of us 🇦🇺 are vaccinated x2 the launch party is tonight. I can‘t go as my 1st ballet exam in 24 years is tomorrow. Please send me some graceful & yet quick thinking vibes at 12 o‘clock tomorrow Australian Eastern Standard time. I‘m excited that it will finally be over and that Stew is taking me out to dinner & to see Dune after!

TrishB Enjoy your day 😁 3y

I really liked The Sandcastle and I want to finish all of Murdoch‘s books in the Penguin Vintage Classics series. The covers are gorgeous!

I can blame my mood, but this story where Jake loves Anna, Anna is in love with Hugo, Hugo loves Sadie, Sadie is of course in love with Jake ... has exhausted me. In addition to the main theme - unrequited love, through the story we also find philosophy, literature, a little bit of politics ... in short, very colorful events with diverse and interesting bohemian characters, but still - prose, the language in this story is too chatty for me ...👇🏻

Simona .... at some point even excessively rambling ... though - I enjoyed the dialogues. 🤷‍♀️ (edited) 4y

I can‘t get into this one right now but bailing is no option with Iris Murdoch so into #hibernation it goes - for the time being.

CarolynM Hope you'll be in the right mood for it when you pick it up again. I think it's worth the effort. 5y
BarbaraBB @CarolynM I‘m sure, I love Murdoch. I just wasn‘t in the mood for this kind of book after finishing The Party and also the font was really unappealing! 5y

Is it petty to admit that I chose to purchase this book due to the presence of cats on its cover?

I enjoy the occasional picaresque novel: the amusing or ridiculous adventures of buffoonish or slightly depraved characters. Jake Donaghue is neither. I thought he was quite boring and lazy and not at all amusing.

I‘ll admit this is a DNF for me, as I can‘t be arsed to finish unenjoyable books at the moment. I‘ll give Iris a try another day.

Prairiegirl_reading I think you meant asked not arsed but it‘s funny either way! Don‘t finish books you don‘t enjoy! Now or ever!!! 😄 5y
Libby1 @Prairiegirl_reading - unfortunately I meant arsed! 🤣 I‘ve been living in Northern Ireland for too long. 😊 Thanks for the encouragement! 5y

BarbaraBB This is such a coincidence. I started this one as well and find myself not interested at all in Jake too. So for now I‘ll put it aside. 5y

First Iris I‘ve read, her first book. Curious to read more. Anxious adventures in London and Paris, not many books have created such anxious feelings. Enjoyable, ended well but also sometimes felt a little like I just didn‘t like any of the characters.

Expecting to learn the story of a man‘s encounter with a philosopher, I read this book as a philosopher‘s memoire, where interpretation (or hermeneutics) is the common theme throughout the book. An odd story in an ordinary setting, that is when extraordinary events become so inviting to be part of.

I know what you mean, @Reviewsbylola ! Here are my choices for the #firstbook of 2018! All are related to prompts of various challenges and buddyreads. I am excited to read all of them but cannot decide which one is the best to kick off the new year. Any thoughts? 📚📚

Reviewsbylola Lillian Boxfish is fantastic. I‘ve been meaning to read The Luminaries but the size scares me! 7y
BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola Me too, but there‘ll be a buddyread and I am meaning to jump in. It has been sitting on my shelves for too long! 7y
Mdargusch I‘m thinking Lillian Boxfish might be my #firstbook @Reviewsbylola and @BarbaraBB ? I bailed on Lillian last year so I‘m going to do the buddy read this time and see if that helps. 7y
See All 11 Comments
Reviewsbylola That‘s ambitious to start the year with a former bail! @Mdargusch 7y
Reviewsbylola Oh is there a hashtag for the buddy read?! I want to check it out. I‘ll definitely join in. 7y
BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola It is hosted by @Ashley_Nicoletto, you can find it in her timeline! 7y
BarbaraBB @Mdargusch I am joining that buddy read too so I think I‘ll make Lillian my #firstbook too, as @reviewsbylola says it is fantastic! Why did you bail? 7y
Cinfhen I loved Hunger, but I think start with something more upbeat...Lillian is a good choice❣️ 7y
Mdargusch I just wasn‘t interested but everyone else loved it so I decided to try another time. I‘m thinking now is the time! 7y
emilyhaldi Lillian is the perfect choice for #firstbook ❤️ @BarbaraBB @Mdargusch 7y

Thanks @Brona I really enjoyed reading this. I don't remember Iris Murdoch being funny, but I got quite a few laughs here. Such a self involved narrator would have really annoyed me in less skilful hands but somehow she made Jake sympathetic character in spite of it. Loved the walks through the streets of London too.

Brona It took me a while to get into it, but I got there in the end. http://bronasbooks.blogspot.com.au/2018/01/under-net-by-iris-murdoch.html?m=1 7y
CarolynM @Brona Excellent review, thanks for pointing me to it. My favourite of the Iris Murdoch novels I've read is The Black Prince. I'd love to hear what you think about that one. 7y
Brona I‘m not sure I will be reading all 26 novels during the readalong, but I will certainly keep you posted!! I‘ve just started the Flight of the Enchanter & enjoying its start far more than I did Under the Net. 7y
CarolynM I remember enjoying that one, but I couldn't tell you anything about it now. 7y

CarolynM Wow, that's a challenge and a half! Good luck 7y
CarolynM You've inspired me. It's years since I read any Iris Murdoch and I've got an unread copy of Under the Net, so I'm going in. I'm not doing one per month, though. My head would explode! 7y
Brona @CarolynM I won‘t be doing all 26 books either! But I have 4 Murdoch‘s on my TBR pile, so I‘ll join I for those 😊 7y

If you're going to read Iris Murdock (and you should!), maybe start with her early novels. This was a highly entertaining and quick read, but lacks the depth and the wondrous strangeness of her later works.

Made an unscheduled stop at Owl Books, a really cute and quite well stocked second hand bookstore on my way to the dairy where I pick up our milk. My haul is not very exciting, I could have walked out with R1000 of books... There was a Min Jin Lee that looked intriguing, but very thick. It'll probably still be there another time. Had to get the Iris for my collection! And I haven't read the Anne Tyler.

I hate solitude, but I'm afraid of intimacy. The substance of my life is a private conversation with myself which to turn into a dialogue would be equivalent to self-destruction. The company which I need is the company which a pub or a cafe will provide. I have never wanted a communion of souls. It's already hard enough to tell the truth to oneself.

Iris Murdoch's 'first' novel is astounding. It barrels at a breakneck pace around hairpin turns until you're so turned around you can hardly tell which way is up, and you couldn't care less. Rollicking, irreverent, and hilarious. Every minute of it is marvelous. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
