The Uncommoners #1: The Crooked Sixpence
The Uncommoners #1: The Crooked Sixpence | Jennifer Bell
Anyone with a Hogwarts-shaped hole in their lives cant miss this fantasy series opener. Dive into a secret underground city below London where ordinary objects are capable of extraordinary magic! "Part Tim Burton, part J.K. Rowling! A terrific debut." Soman Chainani, New York Times Bestselling Author of the School for Good and Evil series Welcome to a world where nothing is quite as it seems When their grandmother Sylvie is rushed to the hospital, Ivy Sparrow and her annoying big brother Seb cannot imagine what adventure lies in store. Soon their house is ransacked by unknown intruders, and a very strange policeman turns up on the scene, determined to apprehend them . . . with a toilet brush. Ivy and Seb make their escape only to find themselves in a completely uncommon world, a secret underground city called Lundinor where ordinary objects have amazing powers. There are belts that enable the wearer to fly, yo-yos that turn into weapons, buttons with healing properties, and other enchanted objects capable of very unusual feats. But the forces of evil are closing in fast, and when Ivy and Seb learn that their family is connected to one of the greatest uncommon treasures of all time, they must race to unearth the treasure and get to the bottom of a family secret . . . before its too late. Debut novelist Jennifer Bell delivers a world of wonder and whimsy in the start of a richly uncommon series. "An auspicious trilogy opener." -Kirkus Reviews From the Hardcover edition.

March #bookspin

When this one first came out I heard such good things. Now a few years later and it failed to captivate me. I found myself bored and not wanting to pick it up to read. Lundinor was a fantastical place with a good mystery but I just wasn‘t invested.

This is a quirky middle grades novel full of magic, mystery, and intrigue. I loved the world of Lundinor and learning about all the uses for uncommon objects. The characters and world are unique and the story had a solid mystery line. Sometimes it's easy to predict what will happen next, but this book had some twists that I didn't see coming. #mglit #mgseries #fantasy #middlegradelit #readinginthemiddle

#literaryluck #magical

I started reading this magical tale of a secret underground city called Lundinor back in December but I had to put it aside once things got too busy. I need to pick it up again because it started out great.

This book was so fun! I loved Ivy and Seb and the magical world they discovered where everyday objects have different, magical purposes. There is mystery, intrigue, an important quest to save their parents, villains, talking bells and whimsy. I can‘t wait to get my hands on the next two books!

#bookmail and sleeping #catsoflitsy.

Thanks to a review by @WanderingBookaneer I now have a 'school's out for summer' book for my daughter (tagged English edition). I already have a book for my son (one from the Assassin's Creed series).

They'll have to share Gaiman's Interworld. The Outlander novel I'll lend out to a friend and it will eventually be gifted to my daughter, she's just too young for it now but has been pestering me about it.

knittedgnome Your kitty is just so sweet! I can't remember how old your son is but he might also like the Witcher books. They are before the game and my son is obsessed with them. 6y
WanderingBookaneer Cute kitty! I loved that book. The exposition has enough weirdness to hook you and then the plot keeps tugging you along. 6y
julesG @knittedgnome Thank you. One can barely see the second cat hiding in the bookshelf. 😉 My son will be 13 in a month, my daughter is 8. At the moment my son is reading Warrior Cats mainly and diverse other books on the side. 6y

julesG @WanderingBookaneer Thank you. I just hope my kid likes it. 6y
knittedgnome I didn't see her! So cute! I saw a graphic novel of the Warriors yesterday. We loved those books. I bet your son is old enough for the Witcher books. If he likes fantasy he might really enjoy them. 6y
julesG @knittedgnome will check them out. 6y

This was so good! The only thing is that the rest of the series is not available in the U.S. Oh well, I‘m forced to make a Book Depository purchase. 🤷🏻‍♀️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I read this book because I liked the cover 😁. The audiobook narrator is one of my favorites: Jayne Entwistle. The story was ok - not an enthusiastic pick but still a pick 😃.

The start of a new middle grade series in which a sister & brother discover that ordinary objects are anything but. There are bad guys, new allies, and a bit of a mystery. Some very cool b&w drawings too. From @Crownpublishing
