Excellent non-fiction about the assassination attempt against Lincoln before his inauguration.
The authors did a great job at describing the political context of the time clearly without being boring. To the contrary, it reads very well, with some suspense.

This was an interesting look into the attempted (but failed) assassination of Lincoln before he was to take office in his first term as President. One has got to wonder what the country would be like today if he was assassinated before taking office and if his successor would have set out to abolish slavery.

I would have never picked this one on my own, but it was nominated for an Audie Award. I always listen to as many of those as possible. I was fascinated by this story, and some of the parallels to today‘s political climate had my heart in my throat.

Everyone knows the story of Republican Pres. Abraham Lincoln‘s assassination in 1865, but few are aware of the original conspiracy to kill him four years earlier in 1861, (perpetrated by pro-slavery group) literally on his way to Washington, D.C., for his first inauguration. Had the assassination succeeded, there would have been no Lincoln Presidency and the course of the Civil War and American history would have forever been altered. ⬇️

The abundance of snow, AKA White Death, forced me to shovel out several times. At least I was able to finish this audiobook! This is a solid title that had a number of frightening parallels to today‘s political climate and events (to include possible coups). I had only read brief references to the Baltimore plot and Lincoln sneaking into D.C. for his inauguration. My only complaint is the author‘s afterward section droned on for much too long!

My mom gave me this book to read because a main character is from my hometown (Alan Pinkerton), but I can‘t get past this dual author situation! How does that work - they are apparently both known authors, so who really wrote it?!!! I did a little searching and couldn‘t find an answer. Anyone know?

As anyone who listens to audiobooks knows, a narrator can make or break a book. Scott Brick definitely makes this audiobook an entertaining listen. His voice is crisp and his delivery makes this non-fiction story, the attempted assassination of Lincoln before his inauguration, into a top notch thriller. 5 💥💥💥💥💥

As a history buff, some of the things in this book I‘d had read or heard of before. It‘s easy to forget that the Civil War began just a few weeks after Lincoln was sworn in as president, and you could argue his election was the catalyst. A very good read if your interested in history.

Got an advanced copy but I haven‘t gotten to it yet. Hopefully soon!
