The Year of Billy Miller | Kevin Henkes
27 posts | 21 read | 4 to read
A 2014 Newbery Honor Book A New York Times Bestseller Award-winning, nationally bestselling author Kevin Henkes introduces second-grader Billy Miller in this fast-paced and funny story about friendship, sibling rivalry, and elementary school. The Year of Billy Miller includes black-and-white art by Kevin Henkes and is perfect for fans of the Ramona books; Frindle, by Andrew Clements; and the Clementine series. The New York Times declared: "Henkes's delightful story is restrained and vivid . . . forgoing the overdramatic or zany, it shows the substance, warmth and adaptability of beautifully common family love." When Billy Miller has a mishap at the statue of the Jolly Green Giant at the end of summer vacation, he ends up with a big lump on his head. What a way to start second grade, with a lump on your head! As the year goes by, though, Billy figures out how to navigate elementary school, how to appreciate his little sister, and how to be a more grown up and responsible member of the family and a help to his busy working mom and stay-at-home dad. Newbery Honor author and Caldecott Medalist Kevin Henkes delivers a short, satisfying, laugh-out-loud-funny school and family story that features a diorama homework assignment, a school poetry slam, cancelled sleepovers, and epic sibling temper tantrums. This is a perfect short novel for the early elementary grades.

A good second grade year, even though Billy wasn‘t so sure about it.

I would use this book in my classroom because it had a lot of great passages that could be connected and relatable for young children who are worried about the same things as Billy Miller.

The Year of Billy Miller written by Kevin Henkes. Chapter 1. p. 1-10. Introduces Billy Miller, a second grader, and his worries about not being smart enough to go to school and go to the next grade because of an accident that happened while on a trip. This book could be relatable for children who are worried about going to the next grade level.

I hadn‘t heard of this book before but after reading it, it reminded me of the Ramona books, one of which I was read right before this. This realistic fiction is funny, and short and sweet. Billy is in second grade and is also a relatable character as he goes through his year in second grade. The story goes through the mishaps of homework, tantrums, cancelled plans/fights with friends, and family (his sister and parents).

I love the little b&w sketches/illustrations throughout this story. I think I would read this with my students and show them the illustrations and ask about the importance of them/how they relate to the story.

I want this book in my classroom!! As a second grader, i remember feeling all these feelings Billy is experiencing. I believe students would relate on such a high level, they aren‘t the only ones going through it! Super adorable.

The Year of Billy Miller, a realistic fiction(RF) novel, is a Newbery Award Winner. The novel is great for children to read because it‘s all about a boy going into second grade and his journey throughout the year. It shows how Billy develops relationships with his teacher, classmates, sister, and parents. It can be very relatable for elementary level children and is a great book for the classroom library. I would use this book as an independent

morganhillman reading(IR) followed by the lesson. http://readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/printouts/sequence-events-chart-30.... The UDL principle 5.2, use multiple tools for construction and composition, is met as the students read the novel and then complete the graphic organizer explaining the sequence of events and the cause-effect relationships. 7y
morganhillman The EL principle 30, encourage the use of diagrams and drawings as aids to identify concepts and see relationships, is also met as they read and fill out the relationship diagrams in the lesson plan. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y
Jeffersleighann This book seems like it would be great in a classroom library and I‘m sure it would be great to create discussions with since the students would be able to relate to the book. 7y

This came home today...#OneSchoolOneBook for my daughter‘s elementary school. Today was her first day back to school and the book was revealed when the principal read chapter one for the video announcements. I‘m playing catch up and trying to stay a chapter or two ahead so we can discuss over dinner.

LeslieO Love everything Kevin Henkes. This was a good one. 7y

This is a cute story of a boy in second grade. I read this to my daughters, the youngest of which just started second grade. It was a quick read, but we all enjoyed it. There were some LOL moments, which I love when reading to my girls. Y for #LitsyAtoZ

Currently reading this story of a boy starting second grade. It's perfect, as my younger daughter will start second grade on Tuesday. Hard to believe; where does the time go? Both my girls are loving this book so far. #backtoschool

Looks like this will be my "read in one day" square for SPL Summer Book Bingo. I like its organization and descriptions of how emotions feel in the body.

A really cute look at second grade structured as four linked novellas. Selected bc I needed an Iowa Children's Choice award winner (plus @Runwithskizzers said it was good)
