pickSwallow The Air was Tara June Winch‘s debut novel in 2006 (this copy is a very lovely new edition which I believe was released this year). The writing is incredible, particularly for a debut. Having already read The Yield, I could definitely see how her writing has developed even further and am just in awe of her skills. Swallow the Air is poetic and lyrical, while examining sad and hard truths. Heartbreaking yet hopeful read.
so-soI decided to read this for #aussieapril. Was excited to try Winch‘s debut novel which is over 10 years old. Sadly it didn‘t do it for me. Over writing, excessive use of metaphors, and a middle of the book that needed some severe editing. However despite all of this you can see that she has the ability to write, so I‘ll be happy to read her latest novels The Yield, which I‘m sure is very good.
pickA compact, lyrical first novel by Australian Aboriginal author living in France, Tara June Winch. It‘s a coming if age story, written when she was 21. Her writing is beautiful. I was so pleased to read that it is on the Australian high school English curriculum. What a talent.

Here on page 34 she‘s talking about catching blue swimmer crabs, the very crabs my son had a ball catching last weekend when we were house boating! 🦀😊💙.
