This is quite a switch from this author‘s normal historical romances. It‘s a very dark and graphic mystery centering around a young woman, Fiona Mahoney, who becomes London‘s first Post-Mortem Sanitation Specialist (as she dubs herself) who cleans up after gruesome crimes. She‘s a flawed character who I couldn‘t help rooting for. Her personal mission is to track down Jack the Ripper who murdered her best friend/cousin. Also involved in her story🔻

robinb are a police inspector, an underworld crime boss, and a Native American assassin. This was so well done. I‘ve always enjoyed Byrne‘s romances, but I‘m hoping this foray into dark mystery will continue as I was pulled into the unsavory, dangerous slums right along with these characters and am totally invested to see where this crusade ends up. Yet another book set in the dirty streets of London in the aftermath of the Ripper Murders. Our protagonist, Fiona Mahoney has taken up a very unlady like trade, crime scene cleaner. Following the death of her best friend Mary, the supposed last victim of Jack the ripper, Fiona believes that her work will help her find the Ripper and bring him to justice. With ties to the police and organised crime, Fiona needs to tread carefully.

This author writes some wonderful Victorian #romantsy, but this shift into suspense is very well done. Fiona makes a business cleaning up after murder and is the best friend of Jack the Rippers final victim. She‘s also working to help Scotland Yard solve murders (whether they like it or not) #MtTBR

I loved Fiona‘s tenacity but I‘ll admit she came across a bit naive & there were times that I wanted to know what the heck she was thinking. It was like she didn‘t have the natural instinct for survival. I would‘ve liked her to be a bit more wary, especially since a certain serial killer had taken a keen interest in her. That‘s also what drew me to her as well, her passion for those that she cared for & her unquenchable desire to understand why.
