Every Kind of Wanting
Every Kind of Wanting | Gina Frangello
6 posts | 6 read | 79 to read
Every Kind of Wanting explores the complex intersection of three unique families. Miguel Guerra, who grew up in poverty in Venezuela before his familys relocation to Chicago, could not be more different from his partner Chad Merry, a happy-go-lucky real estate mogul from Chicagos wealthy North Shore. When Chads sister, Gretchen--struggling with the deterioration of her marriage--offers the couple her eggs, they begin scrambling for a surrogate to carry the child, finally settling on Miguels old friend Emily, happily married to an eccentric Irish playwright, Nick, with whom she is raising two boys. Caught in the crossfires of these three families bustling efforts to have their "Community Baby is Miguels younger sister, Lina, a former addict and stripper, whose needs and wants make her seem only peripheral to the surrogacy. Lina serves as the novels overarching narrator as she falls into a passionate affair with Nick while deciphering the mysteries of her past. Though the novels timeline is framed by the nine months of the surrogacy, it also reaches back thirty years, to Miguels childhood in Venezuela and the unsolved murder of his father.

WanderingBookaneer What is the birthday challenge? 7y
jenniferw88 @WanderingBookaneer the birthday challenge is to read a book that was published from every year since your birth to present year. It could also be the most popular book published in the particular year, although I didn't do it this way. 7y

This was a quietly heartbreaking and very complicated book that explores the ever-changing dynamics of what the narrator Lina calls "community babymaking". But underneath that main theme come discussions of power dynamics, marriage equality, infidelity, addiction and sobriety, and the secrets that families keep behind closed doors. A definite pick!

Oh, this beautiful, complicated insanity of a book; full of secrets and silences and admissions and half-truths. It's beyond messy, but it's so so good. Reading as fast as I can to find out what happens.

My #tbrtuesday this week is to work on finishing my three in-progress books.

kspenmoll I always have more than one book going but lately I am trying to finish up too😉 8y
bookishkai @kspenmoll I always read more than one book, but ebooks make that much easier, so I'm kind of in the middle of like six things right now. 8y

I thought this was pretty terrific...Frangello manages to develop a large cast of characters and write their actions in a way that feels emotionally honest and really original. And she's a local author to boot! 😄 #localfirst

BookishClaire That title alone makes me want to read it tbh 8y

"The story of three families in Chicago, and their complicated, complicated relationships as they navigate through life, in search of what they want. Every Kind of Wanting is a strong, passionate novel about what a mess people make of their lives, and a fabulous story about contemporary relationships and the lengths people will go to to find comfort and happiness." - @Liberty

bookishkai This showed up in my indie store's email newsletter this morning, and I had an audible credit burning a hole in my pocket, so yay for a new audiobook, especially one that explores complicated family relationships. 8y
