The Time Traveller's Guide to Elizabethan England
The Time Traveller's Guide to Elizabethan England | Ian Mortimer
From the author of one of the biggest-selling history books of recent years, the follow-up toThe Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England. The past is a foreign country -- this is your guide. We think of Queen Elizabeth I as 'Gloriana': the most powerful English woman in history. We think of her reign (1558-1603) as a golden age of maritime heroes, like Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Richard Grenville and Sir Francis Drake, and of great writers, such as Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare. But what was it actually like to live in Elizabethan England? If you could travel to the past and walk the streets of London in the 1590s, where would you stay? What would you eat? What would you wear? Would you really have a sense of it being a glorious age? And if so, how would that glory sit alongside the vagrants, diseases, violence, sexism and famine of the time? In this book Ian Mortimer answers the key questions that a prospective traveller to late sixteenth-century England would ask. Applying the groundbreaking approach he pioneered in his bestsellingTime Traveller's Guide to Medieval England, the Elizabethan world unfolds around the reader. He shows a society making great discoveries and winning military victories and yet at the same time being troubled by its new-found awareness. It is a country in which life expectancy at birth is in the early thirties, people still starve to death and Catholics are persecuted for their faith. Yet it produces some of the finest writing in the English language and some of the most magnificent architecture, and sees Elizabeth's subjects settle in America and circumnavigate the globe. Welcome to a country that is, in all its contradictions, the very crucible of the modern world.

These are interesting, but this one didn‘t have the same appeal as the first in the series, Medieval England. Not sure if that was because I‘ve read more set during Elizabethan times, so there wasn‘t as much new to me (but plenty still was), or if it‘s because I was often reading while distracted; I expect it‘s more the latter.

Kaye I‘ve read the STYLES Christie book. It was ok, but I‘m not a big mystery fan, so others might like it more. I‘ve also read Map of the World but it‘s been decades so I don‘t remember a blooming thing about it. 6y

I cheated and opened my #JolabokaflodSwap package yesterday before our flight and was beyond delighted. Mo‘s Dark is one of my favorite chocolate bars, but I adore chocolate with raspberries. Thank you, @Ericalambbrown , it was perfect!

Ps. The homemade goodies are long gone.

Ericalambbrown Yay! I‘m so glad you liked it! The raspberry chocolate was glorious when I tried it at their factory so o had to share. Safe travels and have a beautiful holiday. 6y

Come with me as we take a #MagicCarpetRide through time to Elizabethan England. Stay on the carpet, because it's probably not a good idea to walk around the muck and decay on the streets. But, gaze at the life, the goods (including carpets!) that adorn the wealthier homes. Mortimer uses primary sources to dish out the real story about life under Elizabeth's reign. High on my #tbr pile. #RockinMay

Cinfhen 🙌🏻I'm ready to begin my adventure 😍 8y

Just finished this book. Highly recommend if you like history. Some knowledge of the history of England is recomended but not required. But all the Edwards gets a little confusing!

Biting off his nose? Slight overreaction.
Swallowing the damned thing? Someone call for the priest. Exorcism needed.

I see those days, long since gone,
like the ancient light of extinguished stars
traveling still, and shining on.

This is an AWESOME book for anyone needing to research the 16th century, or anyone just interested in Elizabethan England or history. Mortimer walks you through 1500's London with such detail it's amazing. Learn everything from what people wore to how they treated their ill. So interesting.

Merethebookgal I started reading his Medieval England book and really enjoyed it! (I had to return it to the library before I could finish it, so I need to see if it's available again 😄) 8y
CharissaWeaksAuthor @Merethebookgal I want to read that too!! 8y
