Shepherd's Hut, The
Shepherd's Hut, The | Tim Winton
39 posts | 25 read | 24 to read
In one terrible moment Jaxie Clackton's life is stripped to little more than what he can carry and how he can keep himself alive. There's just one person left in the world who understands him and what he still dares to hope for. But to reach her he'll have to cross the vast saltlands on a trek that only a dreamer or a fugitive would attempt. The Shepherd's Hutis a searing look at what it takes to keep love and hope alive in a parched and brutal world.

Winton has a strong respect for the dangerous beauty and bounty of the Australian landscape. His rich descriptions kept me bound to the page when his all too frequent bouts of unreasonable violence disgusted me. The ending felt cruel and pointless.

A boy is on the run across Australian‘s saltlands. He meets a disgraced priest living in a deserted shepherd‘s but and stays with him for a while. They are both outsiders, both surviving, dealing with their past and trying to make sense of life and faith. All is raw about this book: nature, plot, landscape, language. Well done but for me personally a so-so.

PICK, PICK, PICK!
I adored this book. Winton really does write Australia well. The language, the characters and the landscape.
This book has it all, the good and the bad. It made me both laugh out loud and cry. I'm sure Jaxie and Fintan will stay with me a long time.
#Ozfiction is awesome!

No one writes antiheroes like Mr Winton. Another extraordinary story, this one set in outback inland Western Australia. Mysterious characters, some passive and overt violence, hints of the past, and an unresolved future.

July reading wrap up time and it was a mixed month for me. I had a great two weeks of holiday reading, followed by an end of the month hell week- where it took me 12 days to read a single book. My best reads bookended the month- Moon Tiger and The Shepherd‘s Hut. I had a great school read, and a wonderful graphic novel for #readharder2018 but otherwise it was so so. Hoping for some better reading consistency as I tackle the Booker Longlist!

Abailliekaras Loved Shepherd‘s Hut! Moon Tiger is on my list. 6y
Redheadrambles Still an impressive number of books Claire. But here is hoping for a better August 6y

The Shepherd‘s Hut is an exceptional, thorough, and critical study of toxic masculinity culture. Jaxie Clackton is a vivid antihero- an unforgettable Australian voice; a voice that speaks for generations of young men, brought up in tough places and tough times, and for whom adults have been found wanting. This too, is a novel of Australia, Winton‘s writing brings to life the unforgiving landscape, which is central to our ability to find ourselves.

Redwritinghood Very good review Claire. It really captures the essence of this book. 6y

Received on #netgalley in exchange for my review. A teenaged boy, suddenly orphaned and on the run, meets a banished priest in the wild. The writing is direct, energetic and heavy on dialect, which puts you right into the character‘s mind. The story also has a strong sense of character and place as well as strong biblical overtones in that it ends in violence and redemption. My only issue is that it gets a little too into minutiae at times. 4⭐️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

@Neale you called it early - I loved this one. Head over heels 😀.

It‘s one of those situations where I can‘t commit to another book for a few days. I hope I have just read a nominee from the 2018 Booker longlist- I would be disappointed if it wasn‘t considered. It‘s a beautifully written “Australian Western” as I like to think of it. So many layers, so much to ponder after you recover from it.

Four of the 13 books I‘ve read so far this year. All of them recently released Western Australian fiction. All of them excellent reads: 2 debuts and 2 by seasoned authors.

I‘ve been pondering....am I just more aware of what‘s out there? Is little old WA (population not geographical size!) punching well above it‘s literary weight? Or am I just biased? 🤷‍♀️

Does it even matter? 😊📚👏

CarolynM I think you're probably right. Joan London is one of yours, too! 7y
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM Oh yes, love Joan London. And Extinctions won the Miles Franklin last year. And the recent crime fiction The Ruin that‘s getting a lot of attention. Although I think those authors only reside in WA & were not born here 🤔. 7y
Abailliekaras Loved Shepherds Hut and Taboo. I think you‘re right, wa punching above its weight. I don‘t seem to see many books by SA authors even though similar sized population... although probably lots I‘m missing. 😉 7y

Tim Winton has surpassed himself: this stunning novel grabs you from page 1. You know immediately that Jaxie is tough & defiant, but his raw honesty & youth come through (all this in the first few pages). Winton tells a great yarn & makes you care about his characters. The writing is alive & inventive & Jaxie‘s voice authentic with colourful language & droll humour. Masterful. He manages to say, by story alone, much about boys & masculinity.

Ok, full disclosure. I am a huge Winton fan. Apart from some of his dubious early play writing, it‘s fair to say I‘ve rated all his work. I know he‘s not for everyone.

This book was a ride. It was brutal. And anyone who reckons Winton doesn‘t know how to do endings, well just try this one on for size.

Aside: there is heavy use of Australian vernacular, so I wonder about the novel‘s global accessibility 🤔. ‘Et‘ for ‘eat‘ even got on MY nerves.

Jeg It was that ending I had to skip read @MrsMalaprop . Beautiful writing but way to graphic and violent. Hope we can get to talk about it next time we meet. 7y
Jeg Oh and I loved the Aussie speak! So many things I hadn‘t heard since we now seem to be “ talking” American. 😊 7y

#April80sMovies #CaddyShack Whenever the movie Caddy Shack is mentioned I think of the pool ‘poo‘ scene 💩🤣, so this paragraph from my #currentread seems apt. Read it if you dare!

My current read also fits the #AprilBookishMadness #ChildProtagonist prompt. It‘s not clear how old Jaxie is. He tells people he‘s 17 but they think he‘s more like 15.

Loving this book and wish I could do nothing but read today...
